A great summary of folk and protest music, 28 October 2002
Author: SteveThomp from Victoria, Australia

Freedom Highway is basically a series of live performances of 20th century folk and protest music, bound together by commentary and discussions from leading figures and musicians on the role music has played in representing social history and fomenting change. The outcome is great: it is both educational, entertaining and inspiring. Leading musical figures such as Woody Guthrie are discussed, while the quality of the performances are terrific: featured artists include Ani Difranco, Emmylou Harris, Tom Waits and Los Lobos. Events such as Vietnam, the Civil Rights movement, World War I, the Chile coup of 1973, China's oppression of Tibet and South African apartheid are all discussed. I'd recommend Freedom Highway particularly to teachers of 20th century history or culture, because it gives a unique perspective of exactly what history is and how it can be represented and studied. It shows that musical history, while 'raw' and often biased, gives us a unique perspective on people and societies during important events. After all, history should not only be written by historians.
