We need to be reminded that back in the 80s, during the heady days of long-haired glam and arena rock, there were actually bands going around who were good musicians, who could put on a show without pyrotechnics, 50,000 watts of electricity or a baker's dozen of session musicians. Dire Straits were one of these groups, and On The Night - even though it was filmed in the 90s - highlights their success during both decades. Lead guitarist and singer Mark Knopfler, lackadaisical and aloof when not performing - and not much different when on stage - leads the way with his understated vocals and skilled lead guitar work.
On The Night is a composite of performances from European concerts, mainly (I think) in Scandinavian nations where Dire Straits are very popular. There is a variety of songs from the front and back of their catalogue; for me the highlights are the catchy shuffle-pop number The Bug, a lively rendition of Solid Rock, and the poignant Romeo and Juliet where Knopfler appears through the haze with the shining silver dobro guitar. The excitement level of the crowds at these concerts is amazing too. A must have for all Dire Straits fans, and worth a look for any genuine music lover.
