'Chicago' Legal Battle

22 March 2006 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Oscar-winning musical Chicago is at the center of a new lawsuit - a producer is suing Hollywood studio Miramax claiming they owe him $10 million in unpaid takings. The Producer Circle Company alleges Miramax breached their contract, insisting they own the film rights to the show, but have not yet been awarded their share of the box office takings of the 2003 hit film. Legal papers name the Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones-starring musical as "the highest grossing and most profitable movie ever released by Miramax" and claim they are owed a percentage of the gross profits from DVD sales, cinema tickets and foreign distribution. A spokeswoman for the Producer Circle Company says, "While Producer Circle Company is unable to determine with precision the amounts that it is owed, it estimates that Miramax's breach of contract has cost it no less than $10 million." Miramax has yet to comment on the suit. »
