Watch Now – “Speakers for the Dead” (A Hidden History Of Blacks In Canada)

18 December 2009 1:57 PM, PST | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

This 50-minute documentary reveals some of the hidden history of Blacks in Canada.

In the 1930s in rural Ontario, a farmer buried the tombstones of a Black cemetery to make way for a potato patch. In the 1980s, descendants of the original settlers, Black and White, came together to restore the cemetery, but there were hidden truths no one wanted to discuss. Deep racial wounds were opened. Scenes of the cemetery excavation, interviews with residents and re-enactments – including one of a baseball game where a broken headstone is used for home plate – add to the film’s emotional intensity.

Bad Planet– Limited Black and White Hardcover Edition | Raw Entertainment Studios

Written by Thomas Jane and Steve Niles | Art by James Daly III, Lewis Larosa, Tim Bradstreet, and Dave Kendall

It’s Saturday. A little after 1pm, and I’m flipping through the channels like a speed demon looking for a visual sensation. After going through 100 plus channels, something occurs to me that I’m not necessarily thinking about, but more like a trigger effect from all the reality shows, fix it yourself home improvement clips, and boring news channels. The surprise on this Saturday is that I didn’t stumble upon a classic science fiction movie. Not that I watch much television on a Saturday afternoon as it is, but I know most of my childhood and teenage years, I’d flip through the channels and fall into a War Of The Worlds or It Came From Outer Space. »

Super model Claudia Schiffer, wife of "Kiss-Ass" director Matthew Vaughn, recently posed for a European fashion editorial, emulating lurid pulp magazine covers.

Born in West Germany, Schiffer was 'discovered' at the age of 17 in a Düsseldorf nightclub by the Metropolitan Model Agency, before becoming one of the world's wealthiest print and catwalk 'super models'.

In feature films, she co-starred with Dennis Hopper and Matthew Modine and appeared in "The Blackout", "Black and White", "In Pursuit" and "Life Without Dick".

Nyfcc... Everybody Hurts

14 December 2009 5:00 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

I'm late posting this -- hey, I can't be at the computer 24/7 -- but if you've somehow missed the latest round of critics prizes, here's the results from the Nyfcc. They've been naming "bests" since 1935. How about that?

Picture The Hurt LockerDirector Kathryn Bigelow The Hurt LockerScreenplay In The LoopActress Meryl Streep Julie & JuliaActor George Clooney Up In The Air and Fantastic Mr. FoxAnyone else find it a little odd that Clooney's honor is a double dip with voicework but Streep, who voice stars with him in Fox and anchors soon-to-be-big-hit It's Complicated is only cited for Julie & Julia?Supporting Actress Mo'Nique PreciousSupporting Actor Christoph Waltz Inglourious BasterdsCinematographer Christian Berger The White RibbonI knew he'd win at least a couple. Black and white work always take at least one critics prize. I'm not knocking Berger's work. I'm just sayin'.Animated Film Fantastic Mr. FoxDocumentary Of Time and The CityForeign Film »

Guest Post – “Allison Samuel’s Guide To Finding A Good, Non-Black Man”

10 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

Long-time reader of Shadow And Act, Mr Accidental Visitor (Av) penned the below piece, which he sent to me, and asked if I’d post it. You know how we love to inspire dialogue on this site; I’m hoping this post will do just that.

Here ya go… Read on… and certainly share your thoughts with Av in the comments section below:

Allison Samuel’s Guide to Finding a Good, Non-Black Man

By Accidental Visitor

Most of us have our share of inner demons. But few of us have the opportunity to put them out there on full display for the masses as Allison Samuels has. Not that that’s necessarily a good thing. Lately around these parts there have been ongoing comments regarding  the sanity of film critic Armond White. But I wonder if Ms Samuels hasn’t earned a rightful place alongside him in the bat-crazy Hall of Fame. »
