10 Directors to Watch: Joseph Kahn Blasts Racist Rhetoric in Battle-Rap ‘Bodied’

10 Directors to Watch: Joseph Kahn Blasts Racist Rhetoric in Battle-Rap ‘Bodied’
It was relatively early in Kahn’s lucrative career as a music-video director that he began toying with the idea of making a feature film about battle rapping. The only problem? He hatched the concept while directing videos for Eminem around the time of “8 Mile.”

“Obviously, he’d just made the best battle rap movie of all time, so that put it under wraps until I could figure out a way in there,” says the South Korea-born, U.S.-raised Kahn. “I had to think, what do I have to say with this material? Not just the fact that I want to make it, but is there something there to mine to express something about society that justifies making this thing?”

Nearly 15 years after the idea was seeded — in which time he won multiple Grammys and VMAs for his work with Taylor Swift and Eminem, and directed the features “Torque” and hyperkinetic horror satire “Detention,” which

Curtis Hanson: A Craftsman Who, in Two Movies, Touched Greatness

Curtis Hanson: A Craftsman Who, in Two Movies, Touched Greatness
Directing movies, Quentin Tarantino has said, “is a young man’s game. Directors don’t really get better as they get older…I’ve been studying all these directors’ careers, and boy, you tell me the one I haven’t thought of and I’ll bow my head.” Tarantino is right. For the most part, directors don’t get better as they get older. (The rare ones remain just as good.) There are exceptions to that rule, however, and none may be more dramatic, in its way, than the career of Curtis Hanson, who died Tuesday at 71.

For a long time, he worked under the radar. Then, in his forties, when he’d achieved a certain medium-grade commercial success, it was for making a handful of serviceable if not exactly indelible genre movies: the yuppie exploitation noir “Bad Influence” (1990), which played — with an entertaining hint of crassness — off the Rob Lowe sex-tape scandal.

Eminem's Follow-Up To '8 Mile' Is 3-D Horror Anthology 'Shady Talez'

Eminem's Follow-Up To '8 Mile' Is 3-D Horror Anthology 'Shady Talez'
In 2002, hip hop star Eminem impressed a helluva lot of people with his work in the sort-of-biographical drama, "8 Mile." He's been relatively quiet on the Hollywood front since then, other than a few publicity stunts. All that is about to change however, as Eminem is preparing to return to the silver screen.

Next up for Slim Shady is "Shady Talez," a 3-D horror anthology described as "'Twilight Zone' meets 'Creepshow'" by ScreenDaily, which broke the news. The project is a collaboration between "I, Robot" producer John Davis and writer/producer Dallas Jackson, under the D.J. Classicz/Davis Entertainment label. Jackson will co-write the story with "Underworld" creator Kevin Grevioux; the duo will also produce a four-issue comic book miniseries based on the movie under the Marvel Icons label, for a 2010 release.

ScreenDaily doesn't have many more details on "Shady Talez" to share beyond that. D.J. Classicz

Threesome mark spots for 'X-Files'
NEW YORK -- The new X-Files movie will be packing more heat. Rapper Xzibit, Amanda Peet and Billy Connolly have signed on for director Chris Carter's next big-screen adaptation of the hit series for Fox.

Sources said Xzibit and Peet will play fellow FBI agents to David Duchovny's Mulder and Gillian Anderson's Scully in the supernatural thriller with a stand-alone story, not a sequel or continuation of the hit 1998 feature adaptation. Citing a policy of secrecy surrounding the plot line, Fox would not confirm any details regarding the three actors' roles.

Carter and Frank Spotnitz wrote the screenplay, and production is expected to begin this month in Vancouver. The film is set to hit theaters in July.

Xzibit recently was cast opposite Bruce Willis and Woody Harrelson in Oliver Stone's Pinkville, but his schedule was freed up when that film was put on hold because of the writers strike. The recording artist, who has finished shooting American Inquisition, is known for his role in 8 Mile and as host and producer of MTV's Pimp My Ride.

Peet also has signed to star opposite Mark Ruffalo and Ethan Hawke in Brian Goodman's drama Real Men Cry for Yari Film Group.

Brittany Murphy has denied rumors she has had cosmetic surgery, but confesses she'd consider it. A British magazine this week claims Murphy may have had lip implants to boost her pout, following previous rumors she has had surgery on her nose. I know it changed the shape of it. True beauty comes from within, but if it (surgery) makes you feel better about yourself, go for it."

'Banshee' will wail at Oxygen net
Cable network Oxygen said Thursday that it's getting into the action-thriller business with Banshee, an original movie that will star Taryn Manning. In the project, Manning (Hustle & Flow, 8 Mile) will portray a car thief on the run from a killer whose car she has stolen. The project, a co-production with Wishmaker Films, will premiere next year in late summer or early fall. Banshee marks a big departure for the women's-themed network, as Oxygen's previous movies -- which have included the Jennifer Love Hewitt starrer Confessions of a Sociopathic Social Climber and the upcoming Laura Prepon-Carrie Fisher telepic Romancing the Bride -- have been romantic comedies.
