Terrible yes, but still a classic.
Phil-53122 July 2010
Most people are going to take this movie at face value and think it's a terrible waste of their time. And those people would be correct. This isn't the best movie ever made, but the characters, the sounds, the music and the innocence of it make a film that's hard to forget. If children's films can become cult classics, this one fits the bill. If you want a great animated movie go for some classic (Or in the case of Ponyo, recent) Myazaki. But if you want to see something so totally out there that it needs an audience to be believed, this may be a good one for you. One thing to keep in mind, this wasn't even meant to be a movie. This was an old television show in Japan that was cobbled together to make a movie. Knowing that will help put this thing into perspective for you. I wouldn't recommend this for very young children either- some of it is a little terrifying. Like the lobster fight, or the incident with the eggs...

The Worst Movie I have Ever Seen
sfg4gsw24 March 2005
This is the definitely the worst movie I have ever seen. I saw this when I was probably in middle school. I remember a lot of stupid little things about this movie, but most of all I remember that it made absolutely no sense. I only saw this because my little brother was crazy about frogs at the time and picked it out to rent.

I know it's only a kids movie but if you want to watch something that will annoy you and leave you trying to understand how a movie like this could have ever been made, then watch this. The ending is incredibly dumb and is the worst part of the movie, but most of you won't last long enough to see what I'm talking about.

This is the worst movie EVER
XISCifi25 October 2010
Someone gave me this movie for my kids, and after about 3/4 of a viewing, I threw it in the garbage.

The main character is a whiny, petulant jerk with a terrible personality who seems to just cry all the time and make other frogs feel bad. The situations are so scary and/or grown-up that little kids will be scared, confused, and bored by turns (at least mine were), and the dialog is so god-awful and the plot so boring and convoluted that adults and older kids won't like it either.

I usually just tolerate children's movies I don't like, but both I AND my young kids HATED this movie so much we couldn't even finish it once, and they like almost every movie they see.

If the rating system would allow it, I would give this movie a -10.

I knew this sucked, and I was four.
toxic_diaper8 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I would put this movie at a Turkey on my rating list. I was only four when I rented this movie, but the cover was appealing, and I was young and foolish so I rented it. I barely remember it, except for a key few parts. *****SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS WARNING SPOILERS************

I remember when all of his bros and sisters got eaten as tadpoles, or something, I remember the big frog dying.

I mainly remember that I was four, barely old enough to know anything, and I knew this movie sucked. It was so bad it's not even listed in movie guides. What a shame.

If you ever happen to chance upon this movie,

DO NOT GET IT. My professional opinion of course.

Fantastic childhood memory film
emmalodemonio13 September 2005
It had been many many years since i saw this but i remember it to be oh so cool. I remember loving this film and have been trying to remember the name of it for months and now I'm so happy and relieved i know it.

Now i can see if i can purchase it from somewhere =D I would recommend it to all old cartoon lovers to watch it, if you've seen it in the past, watch it, great for nostalgia and memories, i personally cannot wait to get my hands on it and watch it again. If you've never seen it, find it and watch it.

You may not think this film is 10/10 but for childhood memories its great. My friends might not think so but i am definitely going to get the round and force them to watch it, just like i do with other old shows, they laugh at me, but i don't care, it makes me happy. It will make you happy, take you back into the past for the better!

worst and most terrifying childhood movie i've ever seen!
AbbyLaPokka15 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
When I was four, my dad suggested I rent this movie called the Brave Frog. It was TERRIBLE!!! And to a four year old kid, it was terrifying.

I mean, there were tadpoles getting devoured by frogs and all sorts of awful stuff. Hee he.

Anyway, the sound effects were horrible, and all the brave frog did was run around and whine and cry A LOT.

If you happen to EVER chance upon this movie (which is unlikely) I recommend that you never buy it. The plot sucked, even to a toddler, and same thing applies for the acting. If I could have given this film a zero, I would.

It's not even fun bad. Just...bad bad.

Mostly The Same Voice Acting As The Little Train Also (1985)
danielcordell4 August 2015
Harmony Gold was very busy in 1985 and thats exactly why this film ended up being very awful because the same voice actors did all their 1985 films one after the other.

Codename Robotech (1985) The Brave Frog (1985) The Brave Frogs Greatest Adventure (1985) The Little Train (1985) Yeah, Intersound-InterVision/MasterVision-Kids Cartoon Collection-Parkfield Publishing-Parkfield Playtime/Harmony Gold and their other alias company names as you can see did go a bit over the rails during 1985 releasing slap dash films and thats why this ended up not being their best film ever.

My main gripe is that all the 1985 shared the same voice acting and because they had to make one film after the other in 1985 most of their films ended up being rubbish in that period as Harmony Gold wasn't taking good care of their staff making the same team rotate between 4 or more movies during the same year making them all tired and nakered and in need of a holiday they didn't get because The Little Train English Dub had to be finished for the UK, Greece and Mexico by 1985 Christmas time which I ended up getting with Rupert And The Frog Song the very same year on the KCC edition.

An excellent childhood film, that teaches us about life and death, having a role model, and being brave!!!
philip-j-doyle24 May 2010
Hows it going, I remember seeing The Brave Frog when I was about 5 years old and needless to say it was my most favourite film ever, i loved the music it is very very catchy and the characters can be a little scary at times, but they are very powerful, I thought it gave some excellent and powerful incite into teaching young children about life and death and good and bad. You will have to give it a look on Youtube to understand, this film is my number one childhood favourite. 10 out of 10-I never thought so many people would hate this movie so much, but everyone is different, and i think its fantastic-Thanks a mill-Phil

Horrible, awful, I regret seeing this. Don't let your children watch this trash.
kballing22 January 2006
I saw this movie when my 5 year old sister pulled it of the video rental store shelf at random. Big mistake! No plot, nothing slightly entertaining. I remember finding it quite vulgar. The sound effects were so awful. The frog's rib-bit was more like gargling gagging noise. It sucked it sucked it sucked. Since I am probably one of very few people that actually knows this pathetic excuse of a movie exists, I feel obligated to prevent anyone from sharing in the suffering. This was a dumb movie. This movie was horrible. This movie was not worth seeing ever and anyone who sees it should have their eyes gouged out and never permitted to see the movie again. I guess I need one more line in this comment.

One of the cringiest things I ever watched *SPOILERS*
famelofsky27 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
My mom rented this for me when I was about six years old. The first time I watched it, I really disliked it. I disliked it so much that I would rent it just to hate watch. The characters were whiny and annoying, and the dialogue was unbelievably cringey. Many years later, I watched it again and realized there were some really messed up things in the storyline, too.

*SPOILERS START NOW*

Jonathan (Demetan in the original version) starts out as a tadpole. He and his parents survive salamander attacks and a bad storm where all of his brothers and sisters die. (The first few minutes set the tragic tone that continues through the rest of the movie). Eventually they decide to settle in a place called Rainbow Pond; rumored to have good schools and decent living conditions. Unfortunately for them, it is run by a mobster named Leopold and his flunkies. Because Leopold's gang are leopard frogs and Jonathan's family are tree frogs, the newcomers are not welcome. The crime lord also has a crayfish hitman who murders people sometimes just for fun (including a giant frog who dares to stand up to the gang and a mother with unhatched eggs). In the meantime, Jonathan finds a love interest in Leopold's daughter, Pookie (the only person her father's black heart has any love for). Naturally, Leopold sends his henchmen to torment Jonathan and his family some more. Conditions become so stressful for the family that in one scene, Jonathan's father snaps and smacks his son really hard across the face, knocking him to the ground.

In the end, Jonathan seems to outgrow Pookie's childishness and becomes inexplicably happy on his own.

Because this movie is a heavily condensed adaptation of a TV show, not many things about the plot make sense. Almost none of the characters are likeable. The English dub is HIDEOUS! There are some lighthearted moments throughout the film, but it is mostly depressing. While it may be true to life for some family situations, there are no memorable lessons to take away from their story. Some of the characters are savage, sadistic predators. It was dark even by the standards of 30+ years ago. I cannot recommend that any child be subjected to this movie. Other than some ironic value from being awful and a handful of lighthearted moments, there is really nothing good to say.
