Chile or bust

Happening upon it on WDR, this episode of Das Traumschiff is the very first I ever watched of this long series. Seeing the feel, it is quite kitschy, unbelievable, and something my grandparents would love - that is if they could understand German. I have Chilean relatives who might get a kick out of seeing their country on German television, but I'm not sure how I can recommend this episode considering they don't know German. To be fair, I could understand the plot. The cruise ship sets off from Valparaiso. A employee and another man hatch a plan to rob money from the ship's safe while the passengers are disembarked. A girl meets a much older man on Easter Island and falls in love with him, to the chagrin of her sister and their mother.

Above all is the unexpected appearance of Karl Heinz Vosgerau. Most may recognize him from World on a Wire and The Lost Honor of Katharina Von Blum. He is quite as intriguing here with his heavenly deep voice as he was in either of those films. Here, he seemingly stows away on the cruise by compensating for a wine bottle shortage. One wonders how he sleeps at night. He gets a romantic subplot in which he falls in love with one of the employees on the cruise. It later turns out he is not so much a bum as he owns a copper mine in Chile. While Chile is the largest producer of copper, I don't know how viable this is considering Chile state owns the industry.

Overall, the episode seemed quite goofy though it was reminiscent. It made me think about the past two cruises I went on ten and seven years ago. Considering it showed Chile, it might just inspire me to explore Chile on a cruise. Who knows?
