Manoel Candido Pinto de Oliveira is 103 years old. When he was 93, he made this film, a combination of documentary and drama about the city in which he grew up; then and now.

The black and white footage from the 20s contrasts with the Technicolor of today.

It is a painting, a poem, a song, all of these. It is a celebration of a city in the mind of a 93 year old. Things that seem trivial are to be understood as a product of that age.

Make no mistake, this is not his swan song, as he has made a dozen films since, and is still working.

Fascinating.
