There was a period of time when Vin Diesel was the next big thing. Those days might be past, but the actor has little to complain about. He.s still larger than life, thanks to having starring roles in two prominent Hollywood franchises. Universal Studios Home Entertainment is releasing Riddick on January 14, 2014. Riddick is the fourth movie in the franchise, depending on how you look at it. September is almost always the slowest month of the year, and this year was no exception. Let by a handful of modest performers, the domestic box office haul came in at a decent $575 million*about even with last year's $573 million. It is off around five percent from the all-time record (2011's $604 million), though in the grand scheme of things that's a fairly marginal difference.Through the end of September, year-to-date domestic box office was at $8.17 billion. That's very slightly up on last year's record pace, and the prospects of setting a new high will come down entirely to the remaining three months of releases. The biggest movie of the month was Insidious Chapter 2, which scored the second-best September opening weekend ever with $40.3 million. The front-loaded horror sequel fell off quickly from there, though, and ended the month with just $69.7 million. Still, it's the fifth horror movie this year to earn over $54 million, »

As Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. arrives on TV, James tries to put his suspicions of secret agencies aside - especially ones with long acronyms...
After a long wait and much anticipation, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. has finally made it to television screens. As it airs, the Marvel Cinematic Universe expands and reaches right into people's homes, Hulksmashing down boundaries and conquering new mediums having already ensured Marvel's dominance of the blockbuster cinema scene.
I've been looking forward to the arrival of this series for several reasons. First reason: Coulson lives! Second reason: the simple fact that Marvel Comics characters and concepts have a spot on mainstream TV makes me very happy. I would rather watch Agent Coulson and superhuman-edged action adventures scripted by Joss Whedon than a reality baking show or a humdrum British soap opera. (I would watch 'Cooking with Captain America', though. When »
This morning, Riddick himself, Vin Diesel, revealed a teaser on his Facebook page for an upcoming mobile game titled Riddick: The Merc Files . Developed by Tigon Studios, the creators of The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena , the game will be released on iOS platforms very soon. Check out the video below. »
Two very different kinds of families are facing off at the box office this weekend: One is a Robert De Niro-led mafia clan in the witness protection program and the other is a family who may not be entirely rid of the demonic spirits who possessed their young son.
We hate to break it to Mr. De Niro, despite his mafia patriarch credentials, it’s not even a contest. Insidious Chapter 2, James Wan’s sequel to his runaway hit, Insidious, will win the weekend, while Luc Besson’s The Family might not even make second place. Instead, Wan will »

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 6th to Sunday 8th September 2013...
Richard Curtis enjoyed his first box office number one since 2003's Love Actually this past weekend, with his latest film About Time edging out the Vin Diesel sci-fi action sequel Riddick to take top spot with £1,761,079 - although this debut is actually down on Curtis' previous effort The Boat That Rocked, which pulled in £1.8 million when it opened in second place behind Monsters vs. Aliens back in April 2009.
With a gap of nine years between instalments, Riddick enjoyed a decent enough £1,415,141 opening weekend in second place, up almost £400k on 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick (which had a production budget night on three times the size of the threequel), while One Direction: This Is Us was the only other release to break seven figures, adding another £1.12 million to leave the Morgan Spurlock-directed »

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the latest film to be mocked by Cinema Sins.
The fantasy movie, based on Jk Rowling's book of the same name, is amusingly ripped apart as numerous plot holes and contrivances are exposed.
Lockhart's character, Harry's poor reading skills and how negligent Hogwarts is are among the 83 'sins' that are listed and narrated in rapid fire.
In May, Cinema Sins told Digital Spy that they hope to eventually cover the whole Harry Potter series.
"We'll continue with big franchises we've started," they said, "so you can expect us to hit some more Harry Potter films, Twilight films, Batman Begins and so on." »
It's been 10 years since one of the UK's favourite film-makers topped the box office charts and now he has thanks to an appetite for grownup cinema after the kids returned to school
• Watch the trailer for About Time
• Jeremy Kay's Hollywood report
Following a summer season dominated by animation and action blockbusters, cinemas welcomed a more grownup programming mix after kids and teens went back to school after the long holiday. The reliable Richard Curtis delivered another box-office chart-topper, About Time, thanks to a debut of £1.76m, including £385,000 in Wednesday/Thursday takings. That's almost dead level with the opening salvo of 2009's The Boat That Rocked: £1.80m, including £471,000 in previews.
The Boat That Rocked was an expensively made film that ended up with a weak £6.2m total in the UK – a massive disappointment after the £36.8m success of 2003's Love Actually. About Time suggests itself as »

Gamers would be forgiven for wondering what happened to the excellent Starbreeze adaptation of Vin Diesel's burly anti-hero, Riddick. The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay was a great movie tie-in, and Assault on Dark Athena further refined the game, enhancing the stealthy elements and generally polishing the game's rougher edges.
Just like the parent franchise, however, the game series has remained silent, that is, until now. Just as the third film begins its run in cinemas, resurrecting Diesel's franchise (after he gained it back from Universal), we now know, from the man himself, that a new game is on the way.
Talking to ScreenCrush about the new Riddick movie, Diesel confirmed that he's managed to get the original Starbreeze team responsible for »
This week we have two movies that seem to have come out of nowhere. Pitch Black hit theaters in February 2000, with a pretty unknown cast. Vin Diesel had Saving Private Ryan under this belt, and the voice of the Iron Giant in Iron Giant. Since Pitch made a little money, and Diesel's star power grew there was 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick. That movie didn't make half its budget back and oddly starred Judi Dench. So, we all assumed Riddick would stay dead and buried. We were wrong. (If you say those last two sentences using your best Diesel impression it sounds much more important, yet also dumber.) Riddick has gone back to the roots. Forget the Necromongers (which you probably already did), Riddick gets back to things that go bump in the night... on a distant planet...

It's been a long time since Richard B. Riddick, escaped convict and murderer, has been on our screens. After being introduced in the 2000 sci-fi horror film "Pitch Black," he returned in 2004's "The Chronicles of Riddick" with a larger mythology and franchise ambitions. It was thought that the franchise was dead thanks to a poor box office return, but nine years later, and against all odds, Riddick is finally back. Stripped back to the character's basics, "Riddick" is in many ways a true sequel to "Pitch Black," but the expanded universe of "Chronicles" is by no means ignored. With great dialogue and excellent visuals, "Riddick" proves to be highly entertaining while reviving an underrated series with an enormous amount of potential. What Worked In "Riddick," the title character »
Yes, here we are again. After writing the first article, I began thinking about other great actors that I had left out of the list for one reason or another. After a while I realised that there was actually a few. It seems that we sometimes forget how fallible great actors are and are prepared to forget their bad roles.
So here’s another list, but with a condition this time around- no actors from the first list can end up in this list. I know that some on the first list have plenty more that could be set on a pedestal to demonstrate as a bad movie, but this is going to look further afield.
And with that in mind, and a spoiler warning, let us commence!

1. Indie power rules again
We've seen Vin Diesel as Riddick before, and the history of the Pitch Black franchise yet again demonstrates the power of the independent space and its willingness to pursue riskier projects. Universal produced and distributed Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick, but the studio walked away after the sequel flopped.
Diesel was able to buy the property rights in exchange for agreeing to do a cameo for Universal's third in the Fast & Furious series (back when the series needed a shot in the arm), and he fashioned the Riddick screenplay with original writer-director David Twohy. Lionsgate International took on foreign sales, injecting crucial financial stability into the $38m project. Once the movie was in the can, »
