Riding 'Selma' praise, PGA will honor Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment with Visionary Award

Brad Pitt uses his power for good. The A-lister could easily hang his hat on a cavalcade of franchise films and call it a day. Instead, he throws himself on the occasional blockbuster sword (see: Troy" or "World War Z") for the cred to make movies that strive for something beyond pure entertainment. His Plan B Entertainment, run by Pitt, Dede Gardner, and Jeremy Kleiner, has produced a number of highly acclaimed films over the years, including "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford," "The Tree of Life," "Moneyball," the Best Picture-winning "12 Years a Slave," HBO's "The Normal Heart" and next year's "True Story." This December will see the release of Plan B's "Selma," which prompted the PGA to pay its respects to Pitt’s company in the form of the organization’s Visionary Award. Brad Pitt’s Plan B Honored by Producers Guild with Visionary Award

The Producers Guild of America has selected Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment as the recipient of its 2015 Visionary Award.

Plan B produced “12 Years a Slave,” which won the Best Picture Oscar this year, along with awards season contender “Selma.”

Pitt and his Plan B partners Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner will accept the award at the 26th Annual Producers Guild Awards on Jan. 24 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza.

The PGA’s Visionary Award recognizes television, film or new media producers for their unique or uplifting contributions to our culture through inspiring storytelling or performance.

Plan B Entertainment is being recognized with the Visionary Award for producing stories that have breathed new life into some of the seminal — and in some cases, most painful — episodes of our shared history,” the PGA said.

Plan B’s credits include  HBO’S “The Normal Heart,” “World War Z,” “Tree of Life” and “The Departed. »

Stand Up to Cancer Special Returns in September on 30 Channels

Stand Up to Cancer, a bi-annual special that has raised more than $260 million for cancer research, will return on Friday, Sept. 5, at 8/7c via ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and 26 other channels simultaneously.

The special features performances from music, film and TV stars. Gwyneth Paltrow and Joel Gallen (America: A Tribute to Heroes) will return as executive producers. The goal: To build public support for new cancer research and promising new treatments.

Directors Guild Announces TV Nominations, Bryan Cranston Takes Two

Bryan Cranston led the way in the Directors Guild of America’s TV nominations with a pair of nods for helming episodes of “Breaking Bad” and “Modern Family.”

The winners will be announced Jan. 25 at the Century Plaza following voting by the DGA’s 15,000 members.

The two nominations for Cranston were his second and third following his DGA nod last year for a “Modern Family” segment last year.

Breaking Bad” scored a second nomination with series creator Vince Gilligan receiving a nod. They will face competition from David Fincher, receiving his sixth DGA nomination for directing “Chapter 1″ of “House of Cards,”  Lesli Linka Glatter for “Homeland” and David Nutter for “Game of Thrones.”

Modern Family” received a pair of comedy series noms for Cranston and Gail Macuso. “The Big Bang Theory” also took two nominations for  Mark Cendrowki and Anthony Rich. Beth McCarthy-Miller took the other nomination for a segment »
