Ellen Schweizer is happily married, the mother of two bright teenagers and also the successful author of a series of historical romances. A life that sometimes seems a little too fulfilling for the attractive woman in her late forties. Neither her husband Donald, who is currently riding a wave of success as an authorized officer at a large company, nor the children Hella and Lukas show any understanding for Ellen. When her best friend Ulrike is not only abandoned by her husband, but publicly humiliated, Ellen begins to wonder if she herself is really happy. What does it mean that Donald has been working so much late hours, using expensive aftershave and wearing pink shirts to the office? Does it possibly have something to do with his colleague Lisette, who is 20 years his junior? While the characters in Ellen's daydreams swear eternal love to each other, their marriage seems to fall apart. Encouraged by her understanding publisher Marta and the indestructible Ulrike, who gets the most out of her upcoming divorce, Ellen decides to work on her self-esteem - and get a lover.
