Ratings: Fox’s ‘Empire’ Steady in Penultimate Episode, Dominates Wednesday

12 May 2016 12:04 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

One week from its second-season finale, Wednesday’s explosive episode of Fox’s “Empire” dominated on the ratings front, while CBS saw another good outing from “Survivor” even though its “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders” underwhelmed without its progenitor’s lead-in support.

According to preliminary national estimates, released a few hours later than usual by Nielsen due to a processing delay, “Empire” averaged a 3.6 rating/12 share in adults 18-49 and 9.7 million viewers overall in the 9 o’clock hour. Holding steady week to week, the Fox soap was Wednesday’s No. 1 program in just about every category, towering over the runner-up in adults 18-49 (CBS’ “Survivor”) by 71%, and more than doubling the night’s No. 2 program in adults 18-34 (ABC’s “Modern Family”). Leading off the night for Fox, “Rosewood” (1.1/4 in 18-49, 4.3 million viewers overall) was also on par with last week, placing third in its timeslot in 18-49.

Ratings: ‘Empire’ Adds 400,000 Viewers in Season 2’s Penultimate Episode

Fox’s “Empire” is rising once again, as viewers find themselves just one week out now from the Season 2 finale. The Lee Daniels drama added 400,000 total viewers Wednesday with its penultimate episode of the season. Though flat week over week in the key 18-49 demographic, Fox once again finished first among that all-important age range. In total viewers, however, CBS still held onto first place. ABC actually leapfrogged CBS to finish runner-up in the main demo, though, as the Les Moonves-led network didn’t air “Criminal Minds” last night. In the procedural’s place was a special for spinoff, “Beyond Borders. »

Criminal Minds” has finally been renewed for the 2016-2017 season, Variety has learned.

The long-running police procedural sat on the bubble, while CBS had given early renewals to many other staples on the schedule, but the Season 12 pickup was just a matter of time. Sources tell Variety that “Criminal Minds,” which is co-produced by ABC Studios, was was renewed at a lower license fee. Heading into its twelfth season, the procedural is expensive and financial discusses were reason for the holdup, as the show is a steady ratings performer.

The show is a top ten drama, averaging over 12 million viewers for Season 11, and ranks as CBS’s second highest-rated »

Ratings: Fox’s ‘Empire’ Rules Again; Rough Return for NBC Crime Dramas

5 May 2016 9:06 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Every network was back in originals on the first Wednesday of the May sweep, with Fox’s “Empire” holding up well and towering over the field. CBS had a solid showing with “Survivor,” which won the opening hour, and the season finale of “Criminal Minds,” but it was slow going for NBC’s “Law & Order: Svu” and “Chicago Pd,” which paid a price for being out of the spotlight the past month.

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, “Empire” (3.6 rating/12 share in adults 18-49, 9.3 million viewers overall) was down a little from recent weeks to its second lowest score to date, but it continued to dominate the night. And considering that last night marked the first time since it returned on March 30 that it faced all-original regular competition on ABC, CBS and NBC, that result is all the more impressive. The soap, which wraps its second season in two weeks, »
