Storyline

An apparently simple adultery case turns into an intricate and suspense-filled plot composed of numerous twists and turns, with a surprising ending. Dr. Rafidjian, a renowned physician, seeks out Dora Lobo's detective agency, wishing to locate call girl Ana Cíntia Lopes. The case soon finds its way into the hands of Remo Bellini and his new assistant Beatriz; but the client's brutal murder changes the course of the investigation, leading the two detectives into high-risk situations. Trying to solve the crime, they canvas the nightlife of São Paulo's underworld, where they meet Fátima, a mysterious prostitute who becomes involved with Bellini. Based on the book of the same title by the writer and musician Tony Bellotto, who is also the film's co-producer and co-composer of the soundtrack, along with Charles Gavin, fellow member of the rock band Titãs, and Andreas Kiesser, of Sepultura. Complex neo-noir situated with one foot in a closed family and another in the world of sex for sale
16 May 2012 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

This Brazilian neo-noir tale starts off as a missing persons tale, opens up into a murder mystery, and progresses still further into the world of a supposedly tightly-knit family that is malfunctioning. In the meantime, it also turns its investigative eye upon the detective agents doing the investigating and the sex industry. The movie is about as good (or bad) as your typical Hollywood neo-noir, but with different strong and weak points. So overall I rate it as average. As a noir and neonoir fan, I gladly viewed it and I expect other neonoir fans will do the same if they can.

The story is quite complex and twisting. It will keep you guessing. It has many characters. It is filled with unusual characters that you do not meet in your trips to the supermarket, bank or even your neighborhood bar. These characters are in the three groups mentioned: the sex business, the detective business, and in the family whose patriarch brings these two into play.

The film has a small amount of nudity. It has a larger amount of eroticism and mostly brief glimpses of simulated sex (I think).

Bellini is the detective. He's a young and good-looking chap who attracts the whore Fatima, who herself comes across as a likable, even happy-go-lucky, person who likes sex, especially with Bellini. Bellini works for a woman named Lobo who assigns to him an attractive assistant named Beatriz.

If you asked me to provide a completely coherent exposition of the plot, I probably could not do so without seeing the movie again. Even then it might not be possible. There were one or two instances in which I lost track of why Bellini went to various locations. At the end, there is a collage of missing portions of scenes that fills in some of the puzzle's missing pieces for those who did not grasp them during the movie. Will I watch this movie again? Yes, but not for awhile.

Bellini is conscientiously trying to find out who did the murder, but he is getting thwarted by almost everyone it seems. At least he has some sex while encountering his many problems. It almost seems like the movie's comic relief.
