A&E has been high on Sandra Bernhard for quite some time, using her for ads for Biography series, etc., so I wasn't totally surprised they took pity on her and gave her her own series. But then I thought she must have done something really bad to Harry Smith's coffee, because they gave her a show that was destined to make people hate her.
The majority of the show was her trying to be a competitor to Leno and Letterman. She couldn't even compete with Chevy Chase, that's how bad this show was. It was her trying to be feministic-artsy-intellectual-witty, and it was AWFUL. She wasn't funny in the monologues, and she couldn't even get the people she interviewed excited about the interview, let alone the audience. I think A&E let it go for two weeks before the producers finally got so many death threats they had to put it out to pasture.
Note to A&E: when making a feministic show, at least use a host who reminds people, even in a vague and ambiguous way, of desirable femininity. Sandra Bernhard surely was *not* the person for the job.
