The film is quite simple, it has no extravagant stage setup or beautiful clothes. It depicts real lives of Beijing civilians, doing everyday work. They go to work, they prepare food, they chat, they have reunions, they share their dreams etc. One special thing is that, the film hints that these young people took part on the student protests in Tiananmen Square in the summer 1989. This theme made the film special. It hints that these young people have lost a friend there. This friend that they lost, called "Foot Finger", was a new friend that they met in the summer 1989. He sang very well, and wrote nice songs. Foot Finger was never seen again after the summer. The actors said that Foot Finger "disappeared", but of course the viewers know what it means.Another thing that is used to hint about the student protest is that these young people have a "donation box". There were a lot of money inside, and they did not know what they should do about it. They thought if they shared the money among themselves, then it was not fair for the people who donated money. Even though in the end, they shared the money. The third evidence, which is more direct, is that they mentioned that In January 1990 the "martial law" was lifted on certain parts of Beijing.Overall, I think the film is mediocre. Maybe it is because I cannot fit myself into the place of the situation in the film. The story is plain, with no twists in the plot. There were no exciting scenes, no emotional scenes and no touching scenes. This film may not be a film to enjoy, but it may be a film that reflects the life in Beijing in 1989. Maybe in the future, this film can be shown to younger generation to tell them what Beijing was like in 1989.
