Storyline

This series is a pairing of two separate cartoons. One is about the Grim Reaper, who after losing a bet, is forced to become the playmate of two children. One is Bill, a cheerful, but dimwitted little boy, and Mandy, a cynical, devious little girl. The other cartoon features the exploits of the evil Hector Cancarne, the disembodied brain of a man who plots world domination. Unfortunately, after his body exploded, his brain was placed in a jar and he became forced rely on a thick-headed bear named Boscoe to perform the physical tasks he was once capable of doing himself. Since the preliminary run of the cartoon, the "Evil" portion has peeled off and the exploits of Hector Cancarne is no longer its own cartoon. The series has been re-titled "The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy" and occasional appearances of cartoon characters from the preliminary "Evil" portion have made their way into an assortment of episodes. Trivia

The show started as a short film made by creator Maxwell Atoms back in 1996. The film is about Billy wanting his inner demons out of him and Mandy wanting to saw him in half and Grim would emerge during the process. The film has not emerged since it's in a film roll according to Atoms. But there is a picture of what the film looked like, Billy looks pretty much the same but Mandy has major differences than her appearance in the show: she has pig tails, she has an evil smile, and she has a nose. Quotes

[regarding Eris, who is kissing Hoss Delgado]
Grim: I can't believe I used to have a crush on her, back when she was in that "Valley Girl" phase.
Mandy: I think we'd all like to forget that phase.

Brilliant cartoon
3 March 2006 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

I am only commenting on the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. I have not seen Evil Con Carne.

I try to watch this show as often as I can. I watch it in the morning just before work to get me in a good mood. I can think of nothing like it. It's hilarious, gross, interesting, extremely clever, etc etc. I don't think little kids will get the humor, some of it is somewhat suggestive, but a lot of it is very slapstick. This show has some subtle humor masked by lots of physical humor and some GREAT sound effects, the essence of cartoons IMO.

I has some excellent guest characters, like Hoss Delgado, Eris the Goddess of Chaos, and Irwin. Many of the episodes have a theme based on a myth, either ancient or modern (the coming of Cthulu for one). These episodes take such serious topics and twists them into something absurd and absolutely hilarious. I particularly enjoyed the episode where they looked into the future and Mandy was a caterpillar-like entity who was immortal and ruled the universe, using cinnamon as her source of power. This was a parody of Dune, more specifically the fourth book of the series, God Emperor of Dune. That's just one of the examples of the show parodying somewhat obscure themes or stories.

One of my favorite episodes was when Voltaire was a guest and he sang his "Brains!" song on it. Very entertaining.

Some people might not like it at first. I agree it can take some getting used to. Just watch an entire episode or two; if you have any sense of humor you should find it very entertaining.
