A lot of failed potential here, that being said I still didn't mind it.
20 March 2010 | by See all my reviews

King Of The Ring 1997 was an interesting event, along with a lot of missed potential though as well. They chose the wrong main event for starters, I mean I liked Farooq, but he wasn't that great of a choice for Taker. I really liked how Austin's buildup was done too with Shawn, it's something you just don't see now a days.

KOTR Semi final.

Triple H Vs Ahmed Johnson. BIG pop for Ahmed. Pretty uneventful match, that has Triple H being dominated for most of it, until Chyna interferes. Triple h advances to huge heat.

1 1/2 /5

Mankind Vs Jerry Lawler. Not as bad as you might expect, I had an OK time with it actually. Crowd was pretty dead, but Mankind took a couple of good bumps, and Lawler's Heelish antics are always fun. Mankind wins, with the Mandible Claw.

2/5

KOTR Final. Mankind Vs Triple H. Pretty solid once it got going, though it started off slowly. Crowd was dead for most of it until the end. Nice Pedigree through the table, and the match makes for an effective brawl. Trips becomes the 1997 King Of The Ring.

3/5

Goldust Vs Crush. Not as bad as some have led you to believe, but still not very good, what so ever. This felt like something you would see on Raw back then. Goldust wins with a DDT.

1/5

The Hart Foundation Vs L.O.D&Sycho Sid. Surprisingly lackluster pop for L.O.D, HUGE pop for Sid. Entertaining little match here, I had a lot of fun with it. It's nothing brilliant, but it's fun, and the crowd is absolutely rabid for Sid!. Fellow Wrestling enthusiasts seem to dislike this one, but I'm not like most people. The Heels win.

3/5

WWF Championship.

Undertaker|C| Vs Farooq. The story here is that Paul Bearer has blackmailed Taker. Lackluster to say the least, it's not even main event worthy material. Match is OK, but rather unmoving, and it just feel like it's there. Taker wins with a tombstone. Afterwords Paul orders Taker to administrate more punishment on Farooq, that brings out Ahmed Johnson. Taker takes a swing at him, so Ahmed gives him The Pearl River Plunge, Fans are noticeably confused.

1 1/2 /5

Shawn Michaels Vs Stone Cold Steve Austin. Infamous for Austin attacking Pillman and shoving his head into a toilet, pretty shocking for those days, which is why Austin is so awesome. HUGE pop for both. Both were faces basically at this point, with Austin more of a tweener. If I can give some picky criticism, it wasn't quite as good as there Wrestlemania 14 match, but it's still fabulous. The crowd is noticeably mixed, and both gave great performances. It started off a little slowly and the ending was lame, those are probably my only complaints. Match ends in a double DQ, after Austin stuns the Ref, and HBK super kicks one.

4/5

Bottom line. Barely above average event, but that's the way it seems to be for most of the King Of The Ring pay per views. The main event is well worth it, and there's some OK filler, but it could have been a lot better, if booked better. Worth a look though.
