Very funny film indeed, one of those typical, often made for TV French films, put together out of practically nothing, no overdoing the action, or the language, little shouting or swearing, no pretensions, a sort of back to front Couer en hiver, mercifully minus the dreary existential despair of Auteil or Beart. There are some great little ideas like the goldfish accompanying the main character's hoped-for metamorphosis, becoming a monster vitamin-stuffed carp in the process, and characters, like Marie's eccentric husband who refuses to fit in with those Hollywood-type abandoned partners, who either throw tantrums or become unbearingly tender in their tragic loss of a lover. And nice lines, like Marc Jolivet's comment when Isabelle Renauld (another fine French actress - Catherine Frot also springs to mind - who will never really get the recognition she deserves) almost knocks him over a second time and he comments: "This is the second time you've tried to run me over (écraser is more effective) this week? month?" (I don't remember the exact quotation) at the end of the film. Alexandra Vanderhoot as the barefoot pianist is as convincingly icy as ever (see her in the Bruner Cremer Maigret series episode Chez les Flamands, where she is wonderful). Only problem is that there is no video or DVD available. If anybody has a copy please let me know.
