Framing Movies Take Seven: Dil Chahta Hai

19 May 2013 8:05 PM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

The year was 2001 and we were treated to not one but two amazing Aamir Khan starrers. Both of them were at opposite ends of the creative spectrum, yet they were both absolute masterpieces! One was period drama Lagaan (2001), whilst the other was the ultra-modern, cool and stylish Dil Chahta Hai (2001). For Indian cinema Dil Chahta Hai was a game changer. So much so that it actually won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, over Lagaan, that year. It appealed to urban sentiments, at a time when the multiplexes were about to explode and set a template for actors and actresses to start experimenting with their styles and looks.

The story was simple, yet fresh – three friends (Akash, Sameer and Sid), each one very different in their personality and showed the transition of their lives post-university and the differing impact that has on their relationships and friendship. »

Excel Entertainment’s Fukrey all set to sizzle this summer

18 May 2013 5:20 AM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Your college days are said to be the best of your life – fun, frivolous and filled with friendship. But this is far from true in the new “rogue-trip” film Fukrey.

Fukrey is a twisted coming-of-age drama and deliciously hilarious tale of four young, hapless ‘nobodies’ (‘Fukreys’), running after their individual desires, brought together by one dream. Their lives are turned upside down when they chase that elusive ‘get rich quick’ scheme. The film combines the crazy antics and madcap mishaps of four loser college friends, as their paths cross with an array of colourful characters, from a tough-talking Punjabi female don to a Jugaad Baaz college watchman. Mayhem ensues with predictably hilarious and unexpected results.

Fukrey stars a bevy of talented stars in the Bollywood arena – Richa Chadda (Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, Gangs of Wasseypur); Ali Fazal (3 Idiots, The Other End Of The LineManjot Singh (Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! »

“A zombie fiesta that’s savagely funny and surreptitiously scary…” – Subhash K Jha reviews Go Goa Gone

15 May 2013 4:34 PM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Not taking into account the  expression-less “actors” who have infested Hindi films from time immemorial, zombies are a relatively new phenomenon in Hindi cinema. We did have a zombie film some weeks ago which, like most characters in films of that genre, died a swift death. Forget that.

Go Goa Gone is a savagely funny take on the mythic cult of zombies. Since we are new to the genre there are sly footnotes about them. Characters in the course of their casual and quite corny conversations tell us plenty about Zombie folklore. That zombies enjoy eating human flesh, that they cannot run fast and most of all , zombies are actually dead people.

Working backwards on the premise of heroes shooting the dead, the co-directors have fashioned a fiercely funny fable filled with loads of innocuous innuendos and rumbustious scare attacks that never quite reach the stage of stomach-churning gore-o-logy(to invent a term, »

Mumbai, April 27: For filmmaker Karan Johar, 2001 was the turning point in Hindi cinema as two unique films - "Dil Chahta Hai" and "Lagaan: Once Upon A Time In India" - truly set the ball rolling for change.

"I think there are a lot of decades of brilliance. The 1940s and 1950s are considered golden ages of Hindi cinema. But for me, the most important year was 2001 when 'Lagaan' and 'Dil Chahta Hai' released," the 40-year-old said here Friday at a special screening of "Bombay Talkies," a film made to pay tribute to 100 years of Indian cinema.

Why are only male bonding films singled out: Farhan Akhtar

13 April 2013 1:25 AM, PDT | RealBollywood.com | See recent RealBollywood news »

Mumbai, April 13: Actor-producer Farhan Akhtar, who is known for his 'bromance' films and whose next production "Fukrey" also revolves around boys, wonders why movies on such a subject draws special interest.

In the past, Farhan has been associated in different capacities with films like "Dil Chahta Hai", "Rock On!!" and "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara" - all of which have highlighted male bonding.

Asked what intrigues him about it, Farhan said: "I have been asked this a lot. I have wondered why no one asks this question to someone who only makes love stories or love triangles. Why are only male bonding films singled out?"

Bollywood films on male bonding - success guaranteed?

20 February 2013 12:19 AM, PST | RealBollywood.com | See recent RealBollywood news »

New Delhi, Feb 20: Moving away from the boy-meets-girl, falls-in-love formula, filmmakers are increasingly exploring the world of male bonding -- the forthcoming "Kai Po Che!", "Grand Masti" and "Chashme Buddoor" are only the recent cases in point.

From "Sholay" and "Dil Chahta Hai" to "3 Idiots" and "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara", male bonding, or 'bromance' as it has come to be known, has appealed to people of all age groups.

Filmmaker Subhash Kapoor, who has juxtaposed comic stars Arshad Warsi and Boman Irani in "Jolly L.L.B.", says it's the effect of more young blood in the industry.

"There are a lot of younger filmmakers nowadays and, in a way, they want to share their own experiences through the films - maybe a. »

Brushing Up On 'The Art of Blizzard' With Chris Metzen and Sam Didier

19 February 2013 1:10 PM, PST | MTV Multiplayer | See recent MTV Multiplayer news »

By Kevin Kelly

Video game concept art is a curious thing. It is some of the most beautiful artwork that you will never see, for the most part. These works of art are used to shape the course of the game, providing a template for the game developers to work from. But usually the general public never sees these beautiful creations. Thankfully, that trend has been changing, thanks to organizations like Into the Pixel, and the publications of books that collect the art of a single title.

But what about collecting the work of an entire company? Blizzard Entertainment has been busy making games since 1991, and in the process they have created a treasure trove of gorgeous artwork in the process. Now Insight Editions has collected much of that art and put it together in a fantastic tome full of over 700 pieces of art that range from Warcraft to Diablo to Starcraft and beyond. »
