Turnaround sees Constantin Film in profit
MUNICH -- After two years of bleeding red ink, top German producer and distributor Constantin Film said Wednesday that it has achieved turnaround, booking a net profit of €1.8 million ($2.2 million) in the first quarter of 2004, up from €0.4 million in the same period last year. The company said that sales at the Munich-based group soared 154% to €60.6 million ($73.6 million). The boost was all the more surprising as two of Constantin's in-house productions, Gladiator spoof Germanicus and The Fast and the Furious-style action comedy Abgefahren sputtered at the domestic boxoffice. But a surprisingly strong performance from U.S. pickups Lost in Translation and The Passion of the Christ helped Constantin to theatrical revenue of €8.8 million ($10.7 million) in first-quarter 2004, a 15% jump on the same period last year.
