Broadway box office: 'Cinderella' and 'Vanya and Sonia' see biggest post-Tony sales bump

17 June 2013 5:04 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

The tongue-twisterly titled comedy Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike also saw another spike — in ticket sales — in the week since it won the Tony Award for Best Play on June 9. According to figures from the Broadway League, Christopher Durang’s sendup of Chekhov grossed $654,304 for the week ending June 16, up a whopping 18 percent from the week before. That’s an impressive 85 percent of the potential earnings for the Golden Theatre. Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella — a Tony winner for Best Costumes, which were impressively on display during a production number early in CBS’ Tony broadcast — also saw a 19 percent boost in revenues last week, »

Emily S. Whitten: “Marvel Heroes”

11 June 2013 5:00 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

On June 4, Gazillion’s Marvel Heroes Mmoarpg launched to the public. And I’m here to tell you that it’s a heck of a lot of fun to play, especially if you are a Marvel fan.

Marvel Heroes is a free-to-play PC game featuring a story written by Brian Michael Bendis (which begins with a set of prequel motion comics that you can watch here). I covered the basics of the game in my previous Marvel Heroes column, so I’m going to move right into my review here.

The Good Stuff:

One of the strongest pros in this game is, of course, the Marvel IP – and what Gazillion has done with it while designing the look and feel of the game. With five starting character choices and twenty-one Marvel heroes currently available, each with three to five costumes (although Spider-man has six and Iron Man eleven!), players »

Watch Neil Patrick Harris' opening number from last night's Tony Awards (with added Mike Tyson)

10 June 2013 4:11 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Vintage Tyson. The 2013 Tony Awards took place last night, celebrating the best of live Broadway theatre. But Flickering Myth covers films, television and comic books?! True, but with Kinky Boots (the musical adaptation of the 2005 British comedy film) picking up six trophies, and actor Neil Patrick Harris hosting, these worlds often crossover. Perhaps not as dramatically as a Marvel Universe crossover, but fun nonetheless.

In fact, Marvel even gets here. At 7mins 43secs there's a brief appearance by Spiderman from the musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. For the big celebrity crowd spots, there's Tom Hanks (6mins) and Jessie Eisenberg (7mins 8secs).

But they all pale in comparison to Mike Tyson's cameo at 3mins 18secs, doing, what seems to be, his best drunk dad-dancing.

Also, nice Les Miserables shout out at 5mins 50secs ("At the end of the day...") and what a leap by Harris at 3mins in. »

by CBS News

The Tony Awards race is on between two of the year's most celebrated musicals: "Matilda: The Musical" and "Kinky Boots."

The Cyndi Lauper-scored "Kinky Boots" is up for a leading 13 Tony Award nominations, while the British import, "Matilda: The Musical," is close behind with 12. So, a lot of the evening will be guessing which of these two newcomers will pick up honors.

"It's kind of an unusual year in that it appears to be an actual race...there's no clear front-runner. Like in the year of 'The Book of Mormon' or the year of 'The Producers,' it was sort of clear that they were the one and only front-runners," said Gordon Cox of Variety. "This year, I think going into the season a lot of people thought 'Matilda' given the strength and critical praise for it would »

The Best Comics and Writer Runs of the Moment

5 June 2013 7:46 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Most comics fans have a favorite comics series of all time, as well as favorite writers, artists and story arcs. This week I asked the comics team at Sound On Sight to join me in determining what currently running series or ongoing writers run on a long-running series they are most into at the moment. Here are our picks…

Brian Michael Bendis’ Ultimate Spider-Man

By Logan Dalton

Brian Michael Bendis’ Ultimate Spider-Man is the book that got me into comics, and despite Miles Morales replacing Peter Parker as Spider-Man for good, it consistently remains one of the top books on my pull list. What draws me to the book each month is the solid mixture of well-written dialogue, interesting characters, a quick moving plot, and emotional draw.  I have also enjoyed Sara Pichelli and now David Marquez’s art whether showing the character’s emotions through their facial cues, Miles’ awkward attempts at web-slinging, »

With Scott Snyder’s highly anticipated Batman: Zero Year just around the corner and Man of Steel hitting the box-office this month, I felt that it was a perfect time to delve into some of the best re-vamped origin stories in comic books. While many may fall flat (looking at you Marvel: Season Ones) some have overshadowed their golden-age predecessors to become classics that have helped elevated the comic medium to new heights. The following stories are listed in no particular order, but are merely recommendations to help you with your reading needs:

Daredevil: The Man Without Fear

Top Ten Hottest Writers in Comics

13 May 2013 12:48 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Disclaimer: Alan Moore is not found or mentioned in this article. (Except for now)

Wizard magazine used to be both a blessing and a curse to comics fans. It had exclusive interviews with creators and fun features, like “Casting Call” and “Top Ten Writers and Artists”, but it was also criticized for mainly focusing on Marvel and DC and for pandering to a “mainstream” audience. In this column, I will revive the “Top Ten Writers and Artists” for a new generation of comic book fans. Every few months, I will evaluate the current comics writers and artists that are innovating in their field, find success in multiple genres, or just putting out interesting stories on a monthly basis. These creators will range from Marvel to DC to Image and other independent publishers and will be listed in no particular order.

"Guardians Of The Galaxy": The Odds Are Against Them

Brian Michael Bendis, writer of Marvel's current "Guardians Of The Galaxy" comic book series, revealed his impressions of Marvel Studio's upcoming 3D "Guardians Of The Galaxy" feature, to be directed by James Gunn:

"Here's the cool thing about the 'Guardians'," said Bendis. "There are a lot of fantastical elements, like 'Rocket Raccoon' and 'Groot'.

"I mean, initially you go, 'hey, that's pretty funny.' But what surprises you is how much you end up caring about them.

"The movie may not seem like an obvious choice on the surface, but once you see what the plan is, you will say 'oh yeah, I totally see that.'

"...almost every Marvel comic is a sci-fi comic. It all feels to me on some level like science fiction, but my favorite kind of science fiction is the character stuff.

Age of Ultron #5 Review – Brian Michael Bendis and Bryan Hitch

12 April 2013 5:17 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Despite the action packed cover, issue #5 in the Age of Ultron Event has very little action. Which isn’t to say it’s bad at all, but this is definitely a transition issue that sets up the sure-to-be action packed final half of this series. The heroes are all gathered in the Savage Land (which has been somehow overlooked by Ultron) and head off to a hidden Nick Fury stronghold where they find – Nick Fury (the non-Sam Jackson kind)! Together they devise a plan of action for defeating Ultron once and for all. But as one group of heroes heads off on their mission leaving behind the rest should they fail, another hero has a very different idea of how to deal with everything that’s happened – and he’s not gonna be stopped, bub.

Strangely, this is another issue where this group of heroes stand/sit around and talk. »
