Last week the X-Men franchise got a bit of a lift as Bryan Singer, director of one of the best superhero movies of the 00’s, X2, announced he would be returning to direct X-Men: First Class. Since then we leaned that he’s hired Jamie Moss to write the script, and yesterday Heat Vision posted an [...] »

X-Men and X2 director Bryan Singer is set to helm another movie about the mutant superheroes. Entitled X-Men: First Class, the film will show the beginnings of Xavier and Magneto, with them as friendly twenty-somethings.
“This is the formative years of [the characters], and the formation of the school and where the relationship took a wrong turn,” said Singer. “There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from X-Men will figure into the plot, though I don’t want to say which ones. There will be a lot of mutants and a great villain.”
“Whether it’s ‘Batman,’ ‘Lord of the Rings’ or ‘Star Trek,’ if the characters are good, you want to see them on their journey even if you know their destiny,” said Singer. “I put myself in the fan’s position, and I think this story is something I would want to see, and so will they. »

James Cameron's "Avatar" had its premiere in Los Angeles tonight, and MySpace had a television crew on-hand at the "blue carpet" to interview arrivals. One of the people there was director Bryan Singer, who directed "X-men" and "X2: X-men United" for "Avatar" distributor 20th Century Fox at the start of the decade. In recent interviews, Singer has been asked about possibly directing the planned prequel "X-men: First Class", and he always seemed interested, but earlier this evening he let slip that he has in fact just signed the deal with Fox to direct the next "Origins" film, which will reportedly look at the early days of Cyclops, Jean Grey and others at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning. You can see for yourself what Bryan Singer told the interviewer about signing to do »

Trying to rank the best comic flicks of the decade is a surprisingly tough task. I've approached it with all the enthusiasm Hester Prynne must have shown walking to the scaffold. It's not because I don't love discussing the past ten years of the genre, but because I hate ranking films. It puts me into knots of indecision. If I could, I would rank things in a sort of Venn diagram - Iron Man overlaps Batman Begins which overshadows Spider-Man.
But Venn diagrams are impossible to post, and the end of the decade demands lists. So please, take this as one humble writer's list, and use it to jump-start your own. To keep myself sane, I'm leaving off adaptations such as A History of Violence and Road to Perdition. They were based on graphic novels, and they certainly elevated the art of comic adaptation to a whole new level, but that's precisely the problem. »

It had been rumored for awhile now, but Bryan Singer (X-Men, X2, Superman Returns) has finally announced that he'll be directing X-Men: First Class, a move that will mark the director's return to the franchise after having to bow out of directing X-Men: The Last Stand due to his wanting to helm Superman Returns instead. Variety reports that Jamie Moss has been hired to write the script and the studio wants to really push this sucker into production as fast as they can – especially since Singer is also committed to several other projects in some way, shape or form. So what's X-Men: First Class about, you ask? Well, it's definitely another Origins-type story, and I guess you can say it's sort of like an X-Men prequel. Says Singer, "This is the formative years...

And now for some news that will make you drop your coffee mug to the floor in slow motion: Bryan Singer is returning to X-Men! According to the Hollywood Reporter, Fox has confirmed that the The Usual Suspects director will be back to take on the next installment in the blockbuster series. This is a smart move. The first two X-Men movies, helmed by Singer, adhered to the golden rule of superhero franchises, namely that the second film will be better than the first. Cleverly, Singer hoped to avoid the other golden rule, that the third film will suck eggs, »

Y'all know Roger Ebert, right? Noted film critic from Chicago. Used to be on TV. Well Mr. Ebert's been around quite a bit, working the scene, schmoozing with celebrities, hitting the festival circuit and so on. Yesterday, he apparently took a dive into his archives and dug out this little gem of an image for today's Daily TwitPic.
Hit the rewind button to the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. It wasn't exactly a magical year for movies, with hits like "X2: X-Men United" and "Finding Nemo" balanced by the latter two "Matrix" movies, "Terminator 3" and the third "Lord of the Rings" movie (let's face it-- that one kind of drags on a bit). There was also "Masked and Anonymous," a little independent film written by and starring Bob Dylan and an ensemble cast that included, among others, Penelope Cruz. It wasn't very good. Ebert himself gave it only half a star. But »

It's no secret that many rappers are huge comic-book fans: For example, Ghost Rider and Iron Man are aliases of comic-book characters Johnny Blaze and Tony Stark respectively, but they're also aliases of Wu-Tang Clan's Method Man and Ghostface as well. Meth adopted Johnny Blaze out of his love for the badass with a flaming skull, mystical chain and penchant for vengeance, and Ghostface actually named his first album Ironman, and appeared in the first "Iron Man" movie.
That's why Shady Records exec Riggs Morales jumped at the idea to become an associate producer for the "Marvelous Color" exhibit in New York, which runs through February 26 of next year. The exhibit, which is curated by Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, highlights the six major black characters in the Marvel Comics Universe: Storm, Black Panther, Blade, the Falcon and War Machine. »

Bryan Singer has signed on to direct the next scheduled “X-Men” film for Fox, “X-Men: First Class Origins”. Singer previously directed “X-Men” and “X2: X-Men United”, and in an interview on the red carpet for James Cameron’s “Avatar”, he told MTV that he’d signed on to direct the next X-Men “Origins” film to follow up “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”. The film which will reportedly be the story of the early days of Cyclops, Jean Grey and others at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, being a rough adaptation of Marvel Comics’ “X-Men Origins” comic, a re-telling of the original X-Men stories. Heads were spinning off the neck last night when Bryan Singer, the acclaimed director of X-Men and X2: X-Men United, announced that he would be returning to the franchise after Brett Ratner's miserable attempt at the third installment. Though very little has been made of the project since September, when it was announced that shooting would begin next year, we now have news two days in a row, as Fox has announced who will be adapting the story. According to THR, Jamie Moss has been hired by the studio to write the screenplay for the film. The project will Moss' second, the first being the Keanu Reeves cop film Street Kings, an adaptation of James Ellroy's novel The Nightwatchman. While I can't be critical of his past work as I never saw the film, I am disappointed that Fox didn't go with David Hayter, also known as the »

Bryan Singer, who directed the first two "X-Men" movies before moving on to a different superhero, Superman, is getting back in business with the Marvel Comics mutants.
Singer has agreed to develop and direct "X-Men: First Class," a prequel of sorts to the franchise that follows several characters as teenagers. Jamie Moss ("Street Kings") is attached to write the script, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "Chuck" co-creator Josh Schwartz had taken an earlier pass at the project.
Singer mentioned his involvement with the movie, which is based on a limited-run Marvel series, at the "Avatar" premiere Wednesday night, and studio 20th Century Fox confirmed it Thursday. The comic tells the story of several of the original X-Men -- Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Iceman and Angel -- attending Professor Xavier's school as teenagers. (In the movies, the latter two are portrayed as younger characters and probably wouldn't be featured in "First Class. »

Bryan Singer, the director of X-Men and X2: X-Men United, has agreed to direct X-Men Origins: First Class.
He broke the news on the “blue carpet” for the Avatar premiere last night, and movie ranking website Flickchart Tweeted the big update. They later confirmed the deal is sealed. Here’s the exact quote, “I’m prepping up to do a movie called Jack the Giant Killer [at] Warner Brothers, and I just yesterday signed a deal to do an X-Men First Class Origins picture, which is kind of cool.”
In October, Singer said he was interested in returning to the X-Men franchise after leaving to restart the Superman series. He’s been “flirting with the idea” of First Class since August, but it seems things are official now.
The live-action movie will follow a class of teen mutants as they learn their powers at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning. Josh Schwartz, »

Given the analogous fortunes of Bryan Singer and the X Men franchise it may come as no surprise to learn that Singer has just signed a deal to get involved with X Men: First Class Origins.
Speaking on the blue carpet of the L.A. premiere of James Cameron’s Avatar Singer told MySpace (via Dark Horizons) that after his rendition of Jack the Giant Killer he will start work on the next X Men film, which is said to focus on early years of our favourite X men and women at Charles Xavier’s academy.
Valkyrie was a great suspense film but it followed the box office disappointment of Superman Returns, and Singer needs a decent return on his new venture. He has always impressed with solid film making as long as the script is tight enough to take advantage of his strengths as a director. And X2 remains »

A lot of rumors have been spread after the critical failures of X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine that the director of X-Men and X2 would be returning to the series he abandoned for Superman Returns.
The rumors are true. According to /Film, Bryan Singer let it slip at the Avatar premiere last night that he would be coming back for more in X-Men Origins: First Class:
“I’m prepping up to do a movie called Jack the Giant Killer at Warner Brothers, and I just yesterday signed a deal to do an X-Men First Class Origins picture, which is kind of cool.”
While who knows what this means for Singer’s career (his personal outings of Superman Returns and Valkyrie were pretty legitimate flops, or at least didn’t get the reception they sought). But this means great things for the X-Men franchise, which has missed Singer »

Some major news for X-Men fans has emerged at the Us premiere for James Cameron's 3D sci-fi epic Avatar.
In an interview on the red carpet, Bryan Singer has confirmed he will direct the prequel X-Men: First Class, set in the formative years of Xavier's school for mutants and featuring younger versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Storm and others.
For fans, it will mark his long-awaited return to the franchise. Singer directed the first two X-Men films before leaving to make Superman Returns.
Brett Ratner made the third X-Men instalment and Gavin Hood directed the Wolverine prequel earlier this year. But many felt Singer had the strongest affinity with the material and delivered the best results.
Speaking in a MySpace video clip, Singer revealed: "I am prepping up to do a movie called Jack the Giant Killer and I just yesterday signed a deal to do an X-Men: First Class »

Geeks rejoice! Today is a good day, for today is the day that we learned that Bryan Singer is returning to the X-Men franchise.
Speaking at the premiere of James Cameron's Avatar, the director of X-Men and X2 let slip that he will be returning to the world of mutants for X-Men: First Class after having bowed out on the really rather weak X-Men: The Last Stand.
Singer admitted that he has signed a deal with Fox to direct the next Origins film (after X-Men Origins: Wolverine), which will apparently look at the early days of Cyclops, Jean Grey and others at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning.
"I'm ramping up to do a movie called Jack The Giant Killer at Warner Bros, and I just yesterday signed a deal to do an 'X-Men: First Class Origins' picture, which is kind of cool. I'm very excited," he said.

An interesting development occurred on the Los Angeles "blue carpet" premiere of Avatar tonight as Bryan Singer reveals he has just signed on to direct X-Men: First Class for 20th Century Fox.
Singer was asked about his future projects by MySpace hosts and replied, "I'm prepping a movie called Jack the Giant Killer [with] Warner Bros, and I just yesterday signed a deal to do an X-Men: First Class -- Origins -- picture, which is kind of cool." The video to the right features the words coming out of his mouth if you need further confirmation.
Of course, this news is likely to be received with open arms by the X-Men faithful that enjoyed Singer's original X-Men and then like most movie fans fell in love with X2: X-Men United. The rails sort of fell off with X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006 directed by Brett Ratner. While Ratner's film was a s financial success, »

On the 'blue carpet' at last night's premiere of James Cameron's "Avatar" in Los Angeles, MySpace spoke with director Bryan Singer who let slip that he's returning to the franchise that made him a household name - "X-Men".
"I'm ramping up to do a movie called 'Jack the Giant Killer' at Warner Bros, and I just yesterday signed a deal to do an 'X-Men: First Class Origins' picture, which is kind of cool. I'm very excited" said Singer. 'First Class' looks at the early days of Cyclops, Jean Grey and others at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning.
The hope is obviously to bring back some prestige to both the franchise and the filmmaker himself. Singer's "X-Men" and especially its follow-up "X2" scored strong critical reviews and were financial successes for Fox.

A New remake of The Day of the Triffids is coming this Christmas, with a stellar cast taking on the deadly plants.
It's now been revealed that the two-part sci-fi drama begins on BBC1 on December 28 at 9pm, with the concluding part on December 29.
The cast is headed by British actor Dougray Scott as Bill Masen. Sci-fi and superhero fanatics may recall that Scott, 44, was cast as Wolverine in the first X-Men film back in 1999 but had to be replaced by Hugh Jackman when shooting on Mission: Impossible II overran by two months.
Fellow X-Men actor Brian Cox - the villainous William Stryker in X2 - joins him as Dennis Masen, with other cast members including Joely Richardson as Jo Playton, Vanessa Redgrave as Durrant, Eddie Izzard as Torrence and Jason Priestley as Coker.
