Disappointing Look at John Williams' Music for "Jaws 2"...
MovieAddict201612 April 2003
I kind of hoped this would be an intriguing look into John Williams and his music. Instead, I got Williams talking about how he doesn't like to do music for sequels but did here--okay, that's nice, but why doesn't he tell us HOW he gets inspiration for film themes?

Nope, no insights into the man's mind here, just "I don't like sequel music because it's not fun," then the credits role.

It's not entirely bad, but it was disappointing.

Nice Featurette

John Williams: The Music of Jaws 2 (2001)

*** (out of 4)

Nice eight-minute featurette that takes a look at the new music John Williams had to come up with for the sequel to Steven Spielberg's masterpiece. Producers David Brown and Richard Zanuck start off talking about how WIlliams' score really sold the first picture and helped make it such a hit. From then Williams jumps in to talk about what new stuff he wanted for this film and why it wouldn't have been a smart move just to copy yourself. This is where Williams talks about why he enjoys sequels because you can expand upon stuff you had previously done or try to branch the original score out into some new and better. JAWS 2 director Jeannot Szware is also on hand to discuss what he thought of the new score and why it would be impossible to re-capture the magic of the first one. There's certainly nothing ground-breaking about this featurette but for what it is the thing is entertaining. It's certainly a lot of fun hearing from Williams and getting his thoughts on doing a follow-up to a score that most would agree is one of the most memorable ever made.
