'Avatar' leads way as holiday box office breaks record

The 2009 Christmas weekend broke the record for the biggest domestic box office weekend in history. According to Variety, revenues for the weekend topped out at $280 million, beating the $260 million earned the weekend "The Dark Knight" opened in July 2008.Domestic ticket sales for 2009 went past the $10 billion mark for the first time ever.20th Century's 3D James Cameron film "Avatar" won the weekend in its second weekend of release with $75 million for a domestic cumulative of $212.3 million. Warner Bros.' Robert Downey Jr.-Jude Law film "Sherlock Holmes," opened in second place with $65.4 million, which is a new record for a film opening on Christmas weekend. Guy Ritchie'S action-hero reinvention of Sherlock Holmes this weekend took on James Cameron's sci-fi epic Avatar at the box office. So who came out on top?
When it opened on Friday, Sherlock Holmes, starring Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law, found all the clues for success with $24.9million in the USA compared with Avatar's $23.5million on the same day. But the case wasn't closed and it didn't hold the No1 spot.
The weekend has ended with Avatar taking $75million in North America and $145million overseas, bringing its total earnings so far to $212million in North America and $403million overseas - a global total of a staggering $615million in just 10 days.
But Sherlock is still celebrating - the film took $65million on its weekend debut in North America, the biggest Christmas weekend opening of all time Stateside. The previous record-holder was Meet the Fockers at $46million.

It was a Christmas to remember for movie studios as the all-time weekend box office record fell behind the might of James Cameron's Avatar, Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes and the encore performance of those high-pitched Chipmunks based on early estimates.
Avatar led the way for its second straight weekend win with a cool $75 million from Friday through Sunday, a mere 3% drop from its opening weekend and a domestic tally of $280 million and counting. Factor in overseas business and Avatar is already at $617.3 million with $800 million to $1 billion not out of the question.
Another Fox entry, Alvin and the Chipmunks 2: The Squeakquel, beat the original's bow of $44 million by opening to $50.2 million and third place. A third film in the franchise is expected to be announced barring a catastrophic collapse heading into New Years.
Warner Bros. was hoping Sherlock Holmes could dethrone Avatar but will gladly take the $65.4 million opening and second place,

Hollywood can't be set asunder from sequels. The facts that popular characters are more appealing to moviegoers and there is less risk involved in presenting a follow-up rather than releasing new film have attracted more and more filmmakers to bring out one sequel after another whenever a movie performs well with the audience.

Chicago – “The Hangover” is arguably the most successful comedy of all time (only a few dollars below “Meet the Fockers” that would probably disappear if you adjust for inflation). The comedy that proved that star power and sequelitis don’t have to drive every Summer movie was wildly beloved by audiences and fans of the film have been given a Blu-Ray release drunk on the film’s success and loaded with special features, including an unrated version of the movie itself.

Everybody's Fine seems tailor-made for those with big hearts, small brains, and a wad of tissues in their pockets. Despite a solid cast and strong source material, this remake of a 1990 film from Cinema Paradiso director Giuseppe Tornatore quickly devolves into a mess of treacle and tears.
In the comedy-tinged drama, recently widowed Frank Goode (Robert De Niro) has lost touch with his grown children Amy (Kate Beckinsale), Rosie (Drew Barrymore), Robert (Sam Rockwell), and David (Austin Lysy), particularly since the death of his beloved wife. When everyone fails to show up for a family event at his home, Frank decides to head across the country to surprise each of his sons and daughters.
A trip to New York finds artist David absent from his downtown apartment, and Frank's other visits don't go much better. He is quickly shooed away from Amy's Chicago home, and his arrival in Robert's Denver doesn't last much longer.

For his roles in such '70s and '80s classics as Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull and Goodfellas, Robert De Niro has been revered as the master of Method Acting. But of late he has been more closely associated with animated family fare (The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Shark Tale), thrillers that failed to deliver thrills (Hide and Seek and 15 Minutes) and slow plodding dramas (City by the Sea and Men of Honor). Hint - not much:Phillips, who’s currently shooting the road-movie comedy "Due Date," with Robert Downey Jr. and "Hangover" star Zach Galifianakis, says he’s midway through working on the script for the "Hangover" sequel. Though he’s keeping the plot under wraps for now, he promises "The Hangover 2", which will reunite the trio of Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Galifianakis, won’t simply rehash the stag-party-disaster formula of the first film. “What people loved about The Hangover was not Las Vegas or the bachelor party but these three characters,” Phillips says. “I think you can take those characters and put them in other situations, and you don’t need the sell of Vegas and a bachelor party and all that other stuff.” I dunno Mr. Philips, I think people Do want a rehash. Dustin Hoffman reportedly refuses to join the second sequel to "Meet the Parents." The Academy Award winning actor will allegedly not appear on the latest installment of the comedy franchise, "Little Fockers," because of scheduling conflicts.
Hoffman, 72, played Ben Stiller's dad in the 2004 sequel "Meet the Fockers," was highly expected to reprise his role in the upcoming third film.
But the versatile actor won't be joining his co-stars. According to reports, scheduling conflicts prevented him to act alongside Stiller, and confirmed stars Jessica Alba and Robert De Niro.
Also yet to confirm is Barbra Streisand, who played Stiller's mother in "Meet the Fockers."

"Little Fockers", the third installment in Universal Pictures' popular franchise that began with "Meet the Parents" and spawned the sequel "Meet the Fockers", is looking less and less likely in even getting a cameo out of Hollywood veteran Dustin Hoffman. Originally, Hoffman was to have a brief cameo as Bernie Focker, father of Ben Stiller's Greg Focker, but the actor was reportedly unhappy with the size of his role. On top of that, there were some scheduling difficulties and salary issues which have surfaced, meaning Hoffman may essentially opt out of the film. Why not give Hoffman de Niro's role is what I'd like to ask? I can't stand him and every movie I see him in makes my dislike for him more deep. In any case, we'll keep you posted.

Are there no good dramatic roles left in Hollywood? Harvey Keitel has signed on to star in Little Fockers opposite Robert De Niro, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Remember the '70s, when Keitel and DeNiro were starring in edgy, challenging movies like Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver? Now, both seem to be confined to less-than-original comedies. Thankfully, at least DeNiro has a role in Robert Rodriguez's upcoming Machete.
And how about Dustin Hoffman? Is a possible appearance in Little Fockers the best he can expect? We recently overheard the tour-guide of a museum refer to Hoffman as "the guy from Meet the Fockers." Our thoughts: Anyone who knows Hoffman only from that movie should immediately be sent home with copies of The Graduate, Midnight Cowboy, and Little Big Man.
