H.K. revving up China co-prod'n

18 October 2002 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

BEIJING -- Hong Kong production companies are gearing up for a spate of co-productions with mainland China. Producers and directors at this week's Hong Kong film and TV networking mission to Beijing said that north is the only way to go in light of the bearish film market in Hong Kong. "The future lies in the Chinese market," said Derek Yee, chairman of Hong Kong's Directors Guild and a principal of Filmko. "The young group of upcoming Chinese filmmakers are very formidable. The only problem they have is with the packaging and international marketing. This is where Hong Kong partners can help them. We have that savvy." Yee isn't the only one planning a Hong Kong-Chinese co-production. Directors Gordon Chan (Highbinders) and Wong Jing also are awaiting script approval for a co-venture. »
