Commissioner Maigret is continually grappling with crimes and crimes of all kinds; nothing should surprise him. Instead when Maurice Tremblet is killed, in the evening while on the bed he is intent on rubbing the soles of his feet, Maigret is impressed. But then it turns out that Tremblet had quit his job for years even though he continued his life regularly, going out in the morning, returning in the evening and taking home the salary. Maybe he wasn't a poor devil after all.
