Mary McDowell finds herself in court accused of throwing acid in the face of Elizabeth Plantney, a rival for the affections of Frank Oppidan. Mary and Frank had met when he wanted to buy some watercress. They were attracted to each other and soon were lovers. Frank very much wanted to marry her but she always refused him, without giving any reasonable explanation. Angry, Frank stopped seeing her and soon met Elizabeth with whom he became engaged. One night as they were walking along a country road, Mary suddenly appeared and threw the acid in Elizabeth's face, severely disfiguring her.
