LONDON -- Pathe Pictures, one of the U.K. lottery-backed film franchises, said Monday it has green-lit Gurinder Chadha's follow-up project to independent Brit hit Bend It Like Beckham. Chadha is gearing up to direct a contemporary Bollywood adaptation of the Jane Austen novel Pride and Prejudice, Pathe said. The director and Beckham co-writer Paul Mayeda Berges have developed the film and currently are in India, with producer Deepak Nayar (Beckham, Buena Vista Social Club), working on music and lyrics for the film. The project is billed as a "romantic spectacular" based on Austen's classic novel of romance and human politics. Pathe aims for a March production start in India, and will also shoot in the United States and the United Kingdom. »

'Sunday' blessed with Dinard honor

7 October 2002 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

DINARD, France -- Bloody Sunday, Paul Greengrass' reconstruction of the notorious shooting of 13 civilians by British soldiers during a 1972 civil rights march in Northern Ireland, took top honors Sunday at the Dinard Festival of British Film. Greengrass was not in town to pick up the Golden Hitchcock trophy, so Pippa Cross of co-producer Granada Films deputized on his behalf. She dedicated the award to the Bloody Sunday dead and wounded, "who continue after 30 years to have their names cleared," she said. Bloody Sunday screened In Competition at this year's Berlin International Film Festival, where it was picked up by Haut et Court, which is releasing the movie in France later this month. The Silver Hitchcock prize, awarded by audience votes, went to Bend It Like Beckham, Gurinder Chadha's comedy about a young woman of Indian origin playing soccer against her family's traditions. »
