Many people think that the idea behind making Robert Rodriguez's upcoming Machete came from its inclusion as a faux-trailer in the Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino double feature Grindhouse. However, Danny Trejo told ComingSoon that in fact the movie evolved from many years of planning.
Everybody thinks that Machete came out of a trailer, but it didn't. Robert told me he wanted to do this movie called Machete when we were doing Desperado and that if you look at the character in Machete, he kind of molded this character Machete ... Machete kicks a**. [laughs] It is a culmination of Desperado, Once Upon a Time in Mexico ... I think there's even a little bit of From Dusk Till Dawn in there.
I think it's going to be one of his best. I'm not just saying that 'cause I'm the lead in it, but it's just a great movie. I think everybody's going to »

The other day I got to talk with Danny Trejo on the set of Predators along with a number of other online journalists. While we are embargoed from talking about Predators, we’re allowed to cover other projects.
As most of you know, Danny recently shot Machete with director Robert Rodriguez. The film is based on the trailer that was featured in Grindhouse and it’s loaded with an all star cast like Robert De Niro, Steven Seagal, Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan, Don Johnson, and Rose McGowan.
So when we talked to him about Machete, he talked about what it was like to work with such an all star cast and he confirmed the rumors that it might be getting released this April. Also, when we asked him if Machete was a one off or did he think there could be sequels, Trejo replied, “we want Machete, Machete Kills, »

Recently while visiting the set of "Predators" Danny Trejo spoke to us about his first lead role in "Machete," the faux trailer from "Grindhouse" the film is being co-directed by Robert Rodriguez with protege Ethan Maniquis. The film follows the highly skilled Federale Machete is hired by some unsavory types to assassinate a senator. But just as he's about to take the shot, he notices someone aiming at him and realizes he's been set up. He barely survives the sniper's bullet, and is soon out for revenge on his former employers, with the reluctant assistance of his old friend (Marin), who has become a priest and taken a vow of nonviolence. Here is what he had to say about the upcoming film. What’s the last number of months been like for you, two films back to back, and what can you tell us about “Machete”? Danny Trejo: Well uh… »
Ever since directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez released their experimental tribute to exploitation films entitled, Grindhouse in 2007, which featured "fake trailers," fans have been desperately waiting for a full-length version of Rodriguez's Machete trailer. The trailer starred frequent Rodriguez collaborator Danny Trejo in the title role as a Federale from Mexico who gets hired to do hatchet jobs in the U.S. Well, fans can now stop waiting as Rodriguez and Trejo began shooting the film, simply entitled Machete, earlier this year and are currently in post-production on the project. The movie features an extremely intriguing and talented cast that in addition to Trejo includes, Michelle Rodriguez, Lindsay Lohan, Cheech Marin, Jessica Alba, Rose McGowan, Robert De Niro, Steven Segal, Jeff Fahey, Don Johnson and Tom Savini. We recently had the opportunity to speak to both Robert Rodriguez and Danny Trejo visiting Rodriguez's Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas to »
The movie, based on the biographical novel “The Friends of Pancho Villa” written by author James Carlos Blake, is titled “Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Six Fingers.”
James Carlos Blake recounts how Villa and his loyal companions had the time of their lives robbing from the rich, partying, dancing, drinking Tequila, and making love.
The script, which is written by Kusturica and Gordan Mihic is completed, although lensing is not set to start until 2011 due to Depp’s prior commitments.
The drama, which revolves around an early 20th Century bandit who became a guerilla fighter and hero to the poor, will have Depp acting in Spanish. The Spanish-language biopic will be shot partly in Mexico.
Villa has previously been played onscreen by Antonio Banderas, »
The movie star is slated to lead the cast of Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica's biopic, The Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Six Fingers.
If the film comes together, it won't be the first time Depp and Kusturica have worked together - they previously collaborated on 1993 movie Arizona Dream.
Johnny Depp's experience playing characters of different ethnic backgrounds is mostly limited to different variations of regular English accents. From old English (Sleepy Hollow) to drunk English (Pirates of the Caribbean), there aren't many dialects left in the United Kingdom he hasn't tackled. But now Depp will be sailing into semi-unfamiliar waters as Variety reports that he is in negotiations to star as the titular Mexican revolutionary in Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Six Fingers. Also in talks to co-star is the lovely Selma Hayek who previously worked with Depp in Once Upon a Time in Mexico. The biopic will be based on the more novel titled The Friends of Pancho Villa, written by James Carlos Blake, which focuses on how Villa, an early 20th-century bandit who became a guerilla fighter and a hero to the poor, and his ragtag team of bandits had a »

When he isn’t skulking around the dark and blood-splattered alleyways of the Mexican underworld, director Robert Rodriguez runs a nice, profitable sideline in garish, high-energy kid flicks. A quick Read of his resume: Spy Kids, Once upon a time in Mexico, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lava Girl, Planet Terror, Shorts, and next up Machette, can give the impression the helmer is the ultimate proponent of the “one for them, one for me” school of filmmaking. Except, of course, they’re all for him. Once again he cheerfully does the whole shebang; writer, producer, handling the score, overseeing the effects, presumably on a diet of enough sugar to single-handedly raise the Gdp of Brazil. Perhaps he just likes the change of pace.
With that in mind this is yet another high-concept, pre-teen wish-fulfillment fantasy that finds the corporate controlled suburb of Black Falls thrown into colorful CGI chaos when »

Ever since Sergio Leone made his pair of 'Once Upon a Time..." movies (a masterful pair of films at that) other writers and directors have cribbed the title for their own work. Jet Li gained popularity with Once Upon a Time in China. Robert Rodriguez obviously nodded to Leone with Once Upon a Time in Mexico, and Quentin Tarantino did the same with the title card and early tagline for Inglourious Basterds. ("Once Upon a Time in Occupied France...") Now Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy will be able to add their script, Once Upon a Time in Hell, to the list. After being listed on the 2009 Black List of popular unproduced screenplays, their work has been bought by Phoenix Pictures. The big question is: how has a movie not already been made with this title? The story is based on the classic revenge story by Alexandre Dumas, The Count of »

It’s a slow week for movie releases, with Fantastic Mr. Fox the only release of note in the UK, along with Cirque Du Freak. Most of the remaining big films this year are due out in November and December.
So, with the big winter films already hyped to the max, and with Iron Man 2, Clash of the Titans and Robin Hood being the highly anticipated movies this Spring, I thought i’d take a look at some Spring movies that maybe aren’t getting the attention they deserve – The Losers, Green Zone, A Couple of Dicks, Machete and Kick-Ass. Note, this is a list of the films i’m personally looking forward to, so you won’t necessarily agree with me…
When is it? – 9th April.
Where is it? – Currently filming in Puerto Rico

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has acquired most international distribution rights for Robert Rodriguez's MacHete>, unfortunately that doesn't do much for us here in the States. Machete is the feature-length version of the trailer that originally appeared in Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's Grindhouse. The pic is in production in Austin, Texas, with a cast that includes Danny Trejo, Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Cheech Marin, Michelle Rodriguez and Rose McGowan. Its story centers on a former Mexican police officer who turns the tables on the masterminds who double-crossed him. Rodriguez, who wrote the screenplay, co-directs with Ethan Maniquis. Sony worked with Rodriguez on the so-called Mexico Trilogy -- El Mariachi, Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico. »
This past weekend (Sunday August 16, 2009 to be exact) was the Red Carpet Premiere of Robert Rodriquez’s Shorts in Austin, TX presented by Warner Bros., Troublemaker Studios, and Graves, Dougherty, Hearon, & Moody. I was covering press for the event held at Austin's historic Paramount Theatre and had my 7 year-old stepson join me for the family geared event. I must also add that he was my photographer for the press shots on the red carpet featured in this article. Wait, Machete actually needs a script not scrawled by knives in gringo blood? Following the recent, zany casting rundown for the cheapo flick that includes Robert De Niro, Lindsay Lohan, Don Johnson, and Steven Seagal (...walk into a bar), Latino Review have the first script review for the unlikely Grindhouse spin-off. You may recall that Jonah Hill was said to have passed on the film after reading a draft by director Robert Rodriguez. Well, Lr's reviewer is non-plussed by his script as well, calling it a rushed, whiz-bang effort, even for the Austin-auteur who sprayed out Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Some choice excerpts and a few thoughts on the project after the jump... Rodriquez dials up the speed like never before, racing from scene to scene so blatantly, you can actually taste his attempts at masking the lack of story. Although if I had Rodriquez with me right now, »

John Dillinger was as resourceful a Depression-era criminal as the world ever saw. Johnny Depp is as versatile a movie star as Hollywood’s ever produced. In order to play the famously infamous Indiana-native, who took from Midwestern banks when there was hardly anything left to take, he will fittingly let his Tommy gun do the talking. That, and a killer slew of era-influenced attire.
Depp is perfect for the role. He’s as enigmatic a movie star as Dillinger was a bank robber. His leading-man looks are so often compromised for an uglification process that almost always masks the high-cheek-boned heartthrob beyond recognition. In an industry where looks are meant to kill, Depp has been able to wield an arsenal of murderous ‘looks’ that have wowed viewers nearly as much as his off-the-cuff brilliance has as an actor.

Not only is director Robert Rodriguez working on Sin City 2, a reboot of Predator, and even Grindhouse’s Machete, but apparently he’s crafting a live-action adaptation of the Hanna Barbera cartoon, “The Jetsons.”
MTV News is reporting exclusively that the director is hoping to launch the project as soon as next year. Contrary to rumors, the project is not on the director’s back burner, but instead a movie that is soon to be.
“I’ve been developing [The Jetsons] for a while,” Rodriguez said. He added that he is hoping to start shooting next year. “We’re writing the script right now.”
