Canada's version of the Oscars, the Genie Awards, were nearly swept Thursday night by the Inuit-language thriller Atanarjuat (The Fast Runner), which won five awards, including best film, director, screenplay, editing and original score. Today's (Friday) Toronto Star observed that the impressive triumph of director Zacharias Kunuk's first film at the Canadian awards came despite the fact that it has not yet been released in Canada due to "complications in arranging a domestic distribution deal." It is due to open in France next week.
