Beauty and the Beast Breaks Box Office Records with $170M

19 March 2017 12:39 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Last month, box office analysts were predicting that Disney's long-awaited live-action remake of Beauty and the BEast will take in $120 million at the box office, a debut that most studios would be happy with for any film. As we got closer and closer to the release, the projections started to increase, with some predicting it could earn upwards of $150 million, which would still put it just short of the all-time highest March opening, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice's $166.1 million tally last year. It seems Beauty and the Beast has outdone itself, besting all projections for a record-breaking $170 million box office estimate.

Disney itself was downplaying those projections, with their own internal estimates placing their debut at $100 million. Box Office Mojo reports that Beauty and the Beast debuted in 4,210 theaters, earning an impressive $40,380 per-screen average. While this 4,210-theater rollout is certainly large, it ranks as the 29th widest of all time, »

The Belko Experiment Review: A Grim But Effective Social Thriller

17 March 2017 7:00 AM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

There was a time before Guardians of the Galaxy when filmmaker James Gunn was better known for horror films like Slither and for writing the screenplay for Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake. One of the movies Gunn had been talking about making for almost as long was a violent high-concept thriller called The Belko Experiment, which as you can guess from the title, has finally seen the light of day. (Gunn went on to make the low-budget action-comedy Super, got the gig directing Guardians and the rest is history.)

The Belko Corporation has a large branch office building in the middle of Bogota, Colombia, and we meet the company’s CEO Barry Norris (Tony Goldwyn from Scandal) as he’s arriving at work and noticing the new armed security detail carefully checking everyone entering the building. Before we can think too much about this, we meet Melonie Diaz »

This Past Weekend:

As expected, Legendary Pictures’ Kong: Skull Island won the weekend, and honestly, the Weekend Warrior’s original prediction of $61.6 million was pretty darn close to the movie’s opening weekend which ended up at $61 million. (Unfortunately, I chickened out on Thursday because my prediction was so much higher than all others and lowered it to $58 million, which was Still closer to than every other prediction last weekend.) Beauty and the Beast on Track to Smash Spring Box Office Records

14 March 2017 9:57 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

It wasn't too long ago that the month of March wasn't exactly seen as the home to box office juggernauts, but that all changed seven years ago when Disney's Alice in Wonderland opened huge with $116.1 million. Just a few years later, Lionsgate positioned its new franchise The Hunger Games in March, where it opened to the tune of a record-breaking $152.5 million, and last year, that record was broken by Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice's $166.1 million. This year, Disney's Beauty and the Beast could very well vie for that record, but while it will easily come out on top this weekend, we're predicting this live-action fairy tale adaptation will arrive just short of the record, with $139.7 million.

Last month, box office analysts predicted that Beauty and the Beast could open around $120 million, while Disney itself was downplaying those projections, with their own internal estimates placing their debut at $100 million. »

The Belko Experiment: Greg McLean On Realizing James Gunn’s Office Terror

14 March 2017 8:00 AM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

In 2005, director Greg McLean first got attention with his Aussie thriller Wolf Creek, which led to a sequel and a recent cable mini-series, as he continued to work in the horror realm.

McLean’s latest movie The Belko Experiment is actually based on an original idea by James Gunn, who came up with the idea and wrote the script years ago, but got too busy developing Marvel StudiosGuardians of the Galaxy to make the movie. He called upon McLean to develop the idea of a group of corporate employees who find themselves in a situation where they need to kill in order to survive the exact reverse of a team-building situation.

John Gallagher, Jr. (10 Cloverfield Lane) plays Mike Milch, a popular employee at the Belko Corporation, whose building in Bogota, Colombia is thrown into disarray when a voice comes over the P.A. telling the 80 employees that they need »
