2016 Emmy Contenders: Reality Competition

13 June 2016 10:30 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

13This category continually churns out all manner of drama, comedy and larger-than-life characters, but Emmy voters have been sticking with the same set of nominees for almost a decade.

While no one is arguing about the high production values and quality of “The Amazing Race,” “Project Runway,” last year’s winner, “The Voice,” and “Top Chef,” wouldn’t it be great to see entertaining series such as “MasterChef Junior,” “America’s Got Talent,” “Face Off,” cultural touchstone “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and the growing phenomenon “American Ninja Warrior” — all showcasing talented folks and mostly devoid of backbiting, bleeped words and horrible behavior — getting a nod?

Cablers such as Food Network and Hgtv have built their brands with unscripted series, including successful entries in the reality competition arena. Series from those lifestyle networks that are stepping up their, ahem, games, include “Chopped” — which has inspired many a family to test their mettle at home — the deliciously subversive “Cutthroat Kitchen,” “Brother vs. Brother” and “Ellen’s Design Challenge.” “Lip Sync Battle” is a viral phenomenom as well.

Or will voters find it in their hearts to reward “American Idol” in its final season?

Jerry Bruckheimer Television Goes Independent, Ending 15-Year Run With Warner Bros. TV (Exclusive)

9 June 2016 4:56 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Jerry Bruckheimer Television is looking to become an independently financed operation, a change that will mark the end of its exclusive pact with Warner Bros. Television after a 15-year run.

Bruckheimer’s television division is shopping for investors and financing that would allow the company to retain a much greater ownership interest and rights to its shows. Producer Mark Gordon cut a deal last year with Entertainment One that was seen as the beginning of a new era for prolific TV producers.

“We’ve always been entrepreneurial,” Bruckheimer told Variety. “We’ve always loved trying new things. Warner Bros. is fantastic, they’ve been great partners. We’re not out of business with them, we’re just no longer exclusive with them.”

Bruckheimer declined to elaborate on the specifics of the financing that the company is seeking. The shift with Warner Bros. TV took effect about a week ago. “It »

Transgender Representation On TV Hitting New Highs, From ‘Transparent’ to ‘I Am Cait’

8 June 2016 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Next year, Laverne Cox will play an Ivy League-educated lawyer in the CBS series “Doubt,” making her the first transgender actor to play a transgender series regular character on broadcast television. It’s a looming historic moment for television, and one in a series of recent turning points that indicates change and acceptance for the transgender community.

In 2015, Caitlyn Jenner’s Vanity Fair cover launched with viral force followed up by her reality series “I Am Cait.” In 2014, Amazon found a juggernaut in “Transparent.” The year prior, Cox was starting to become a household name for her performance in “Orange Is the New Black” and her transgender activism.

Yet, almost one year after Jenner’s announcement, transgender representation on television is still leaping over hurdles. “We still have a long way to go,” says Nick Adams, GLAAD’s director of programs and transgender media.

Emmys: Fresh Faces and Returning Favorites Go Head-to-Head for Voters

31 May 2016 3:02 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Looking back, 2015 was a transformative year for the Emmys.

HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and “Veep” nabbed their first wins in the top series categories. First-time champs Jeffrey Tambor and Jon Hamm took the lead actor wins for the freshman season of Amazon’s “Transparent” and the final season of AMC’s “Mad Men,” respectively. Viola Davis became the first black woman to triumph in the drama lead actress category thanks to ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder.”

Can 2016 possibly top that celebration of the new?

After all, when it comes to the Emmys, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

In the midst of all the fresh faces, last year’s winners across the drama and comedy supporting categories were all repeat honorees. The award in the brand new variety talk series category went to longtime Emmy favorite “The Daily Show” (although buzzy “Inside Amy Schumer »
