Reality TV Crews Get Rush From Toughest Shoots

22 June 2017 10:30 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Reality TV seems so spontaneous that it’s hard to believe how much work goes into making it. But for the DPs and camera operators tasked with capturing the action and the drama on the fly, the genre is one of the most demanding in the business.

“It can be busy, it can be hectic and it can be crazy,” says Shaun Newton, a camera operator on MTV’s “Are You the One?” which wrapped its fifth season in March.

“Twelve-hour days are typical for us,” Newton adds. “But it can be rewarding, and it’s a really cool job. »

Why Donald Trump May Have a Big Impact on the Emmys

8 June 2017 7:55 AM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - TV News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - TV News news »

For someone who purports to hate the Emmys, Donald Trump has given the awards show a lot of attention over the years. As The Hollywood Reporter was the first to report, Trump has been a member of the TV Academy since June 2004, six months after his reality show The Apprentice premiered. That program generated massive ratings for NBC, but it never clicked with Emmy voters. Its first two seasons were nominated for reality competition series, but it lost both times to The Amazing Race and was never nominated again — to Trump's everlasting fury. "I got »

Last Week’S Podcast: ‘The Amazing Race’ Host Phil Keoghan on Job Hazards: Too Much Sun and Sensory Overload — IndieWire’s Turn It On Podcast

If there’s a line in comedy, both Kathy Griffin and Bill Maher crossed it this month. Both comedians have made a career out of being politically incorrect –but given the reaction to their antics, Griffin’s photo shoot of a bloodied pumpkin head made to look like Donald Trump, and Maher’s casual use of the “n” word on his “Real Time” series, both took it a step too far.

But where’s the bar in comedy, when being offensive is often part of what it means to be a comedian? Back in January, long before the Griffin/Maher uproar, IndieWire’s Turn It On podcast spoke with Jim Carrey about how comedy has changed as standups have become more scrutinized by their every word. »

Carson Daly Wouldn’t Let Go of His First Emmy for ‘The Voice’

6 June 2017 11:45 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

In 2012 Carson Saly was a newcomer to the Emmy Awards. NBC’s “The Voice,” which Daly hosts and produces, had received its first Emmy nomination. Though the show lost that year, it won in 2013, becoming the second show to beat “The Amazing Race” since the inception of the reality competition category in 2003. Since then, Daly has taken home two more Emmys (in 2015 and 2016) for the singing competition show. No one is more surprised about his trio of Emmy hardware than Daly.

In 2013 did you think “The Voice” had a shot against perennial favorite “The Amazing Race”?

I didn’t think we had a chance. We were shocked the year before to be nominated because we were nominated and “American Idol” wasn’t, so we figured we got the singing spot. Year one we knew we wouldn’t win. Then come year two, we figured the same thing. You have to remember we were still in the afterglow »

Emmys: Why Do Voters Keep Recycling the Same Reality Contenders?

American Idol — dust barely settled on its instantly recognizable neon logo since its 2016 Fox swan song — is the latest example of a big conundrum facing reality programming: It is a genre largely fueled by familiarity. The guarantee of even a little viewer nostalgia is often considered safer than gambling on a brand new pitch.

This theme is equally evident on the shortlist of series vying to win the genre's most high-profile prize, outstanding reality competition program, at the Primetime Emmys. The Amazing Race (10 wins), The Voice (three wins) and Top Chef »

TV Ratings: NBA Finals Game 1 Tops Thursday, Holds Steady With 2016 Opener

2 June 2017 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers on ABC easily won the night in the Thursday overnight ratings, with the opening game of the series approximately even in the ratings with the 2016 opener.

According to early Nielsen data, Thursday night’s game averaged a 5.9 rating in adults 18-49 and 15.7 million viewers. However, due to the nature of live sports, the overnight numbers will more than likely adjust up later today. 2016’s Game 1 initially opened to a 6.0 and 15.6 million viewers, but eventually adjusted up to to a 7.3 rating and 19.2 million viewers.

Earlier on ABC, the network aired Jimmy Kimmel’s “Live Game Night” special (2.5, 8.7 million) at 8 p.m., followed by “NBA Countdown” (2.7, 8.4 million) at 8:30 p.m.

On Fox, the second episode of “Beat Shazam” (1.1, 3.4 million) was even with its premiere last week. “Love Connection” (0.8, 2.9 million) was down from its premiere last week, but in fairness it aired at the same »

Are Scott and Brooke the Worst Winners in 'Amazing Race' History?

2 June 2017 5:11 AM, PDT | buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news »

The Amazing Race season 29 ended with a bit of an upset. Despite almost constantly being at the end of the pack and one of them threatening to give up at nearly every opportunity, Brooke and Scott won The Amazing Race. In a season full of strangers, Brooke and Scott, mainly Brooke, did little to endear themselves to the audience or their fellow contestants. The two bickered, whined and backstabbed but they made it to the top. A win of theirs might not be a win for the audience, however. Brooke and Scott truly rank as some of the worst winners in Amazing Race history.

The Amazing Race Finale: And the Winning Team Is...

1 June 2017 8:22 PM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

The Amazing Race has two new winners, though they're not quite who most of us expected. Brooke Camhi and Scott Flanaryjust dominated the entire finale to come out on top, with "Mom and Dad" Tara and Joey coming in second, and Logan and London coming in third after a race around Chicago.  While Scott and Brooke were obviously thrilled at this outcome, many fans do not seem so happy. Scott and Brooke had a rather difficult time getting along all season, which is to be expected when all the teams are made up of complete strangers, but it made the pair a little bit hard to watch. Brooke and Scott even acknowledged this in their winning speeches.  "Brooke and I were very different »
