2009's Trashy Reality Report Card

While there are reality shows like The Amazing Race, Survivor, or even Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List garnering praise and Emmys for their quality level or American Idol, America's Next Top Model, or So You Think You Can Dance giving real people with potential to fulfill their dreams, trashy reality shows appear like the black sheep of the family. They are loud, brash, and sleazy. Like a car crash, you can't help but turn and look.
For reality television, 2009 has provided some of the biggest reasons why reality television gets a bad reputation. Four cable channels have become festering points for Trashy Reality in 2009: VH1, E!, MTV, and We.

Before the Ball dropped in Times Square to ring in 2009, the Great Gay Debate was underway in America. Prop. 8 was the catalyst, and in its wake everyone had an opinion on Glbt civil rights. We listened. We blogged. But someone else was watching too. Someone who sees you when you're sleeping, who knows when you're awake. Someone who knows when you've been bad or good — and keeps a list to prove it.
Yep, Santa Claus is coming to town in just a few days, and we've managed to get our hands on his 2009 Naughty and Nice list. The folks on the Naughty list will get a lump of clean burning coal in their stockings this year, and a rainbow-colored Asshat. The Nice list will receive an AfterElton.com Crown of Visibility, and "Glee: The Music, Volumes 1 and 2."

Survivor Finalist Russell Really Is an Ass: Whereas 4th Place Brett Showed Class Will Tell

I watch a bit of Reality TV and I'm a big fan of seven-time Emmy Recipient The Amazing Race -- the best of the breed. Better than American Idol and all the rest on NBC, Fox, ABC or the CW. I'd love to participate with my pal, charismatic German TV Star Andreas Stenschke (take a look and you'll agree) -- not just for the million dollars. It's fun and challenging, and the winner wins because the team has achieved victory, as opposed to contests decided upon by scheming and jealous cohabitants of a house or remote island.
But the point here is to cast light on the devil incarnate of the most recent Survivor, which concluded Sunday night on CBS. Machiavellian is too tame to describe the overconfident and somewhat deluded Russell Hantz, who was earlier voted

'Survivor,' 'Amazing Race' return in February

CBS isn't playing around much with its schedule at midseason -- it's pretty solid, after all -- so the network's announcement amounts mostly to setting return dates for "Survivor" and "The Amazing Race."
Both shows will be back in mid-February. "Survivor's" 20th installment, an all-star "Heroes vs. Villains" game, will debut with a two-hour episode on Thursday, Feb. 11. The 16th season of "The Amazing Race" will follow three nights later on Sunday, Feb. 14.
Valentine's Day will also bring the time-period premiere of "Undercover Boss," which is getting a post-Super Bowl debut. It will follow "The Amazing Race" at 9 p.m. on Sundays, the spot previously occupied by "Three Rivers." "Cold Case" will slide back to 10 p.m.
CBS has also slotted a couple of specials for Thursday night in the run-up to the "Survivor" premiere. Jeff Probst's "Live for the Moment" will air Jan. 28, as previously announced, and on Feb.

CBS Chooses to Premiere 'Undercover Boss' after Superbowl

CBS has announced the show that will air in the coveted spot immediately following the Superbowl on Sunday, February 7, and it's not one of their top hit shows like The Big Bang Theory, The Mentalist, or even Survivor. This year they will premiere a brand new reality series called Undercover Boss in the post-Superbowl slot.
It's certainly not the first time a network has put a brand new show on after the Superbowl (Fox did it in 2005 with American Dad's premiere and ABC did it in 1995 with Extreme) but it's far from common practice. And to utilize the space for a brand new reality series, in a time when reality series seem to come and go faster than the wind does seem a bit odd. Add to that the fact that this is coming from the network with some of the biggest ratings hits on television, and it almost seems ludicrous.

What?! It’s not enough that we spent the whole year
providing you with insightful news and analysis on gay and bisexual
entertainment – now we have to pick which 2009 projects we think best
represented gay and bisexual men?!
Sorry, we’re getting a little Grinch-y around here come
year-end.
But the fact is, gay and bisexual entertainment-related news
is inexorably linked with the issue of visibility. If you know anything at all
about the history of such entertainment, you know that it’s almost always been
“controversial.” As passionate as the creators of these projects have always been,
there’s been a similarly strong counter-pressure to keep these themes hidden or
under wraps.
As a result, for a website like ours, covering the “news” of
these projects inevitably becomes a question of championing the ones of quality
(and giving the hook to those who don’t measure up, or that

We all waited with bated breath to see which CBS show will get the benefit of following up Super Bowl Xliv on Sunday, Feb. 7.
In fact, thousands of readers voted and decided the honor should go to "The Big Bang Theory."
But it wasn't meant to be ... the winner is the new reality show "Undercover Boss," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Boss" follows top executives as they anonymously assume entry-level jobs at
their company and receive eye-opening perspectives on how their decisions affect
lower-wage employees.
The premiere episode features Larry O'Donnell, president and
COO of Waste Management, as he cleans porta-potties and works at a recycling
plant. The series will run at 9 p.m. Sundays starting Feb. 14, along with
the 16th cycle of "The Amazing Race."
The network decision will be the first time since 2005 that a broadcast network has elected to air a
new program after the Super Bowl.

Weekend Provocation: Your Gear Will Not Save You

Gear is, in a word, awesome. And I mean that in the literal, original sense of the word. When I walk into my studio—especially now that I've done some gigs and accumulated some sample libraries—I have a feeling akin to reverence. Not in an egomaniacal way (the High Holy Temple of Film Music! Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair!), but just in terms of the incredible creative resource that room has become in my life.
There's something I think you should keep in mind, though, when you get to a similar point in your career: Your gear will not save you.
It won't save you from a lack of planning.
It won't save you from the unexpected.
It won't save you from a bad collaboration.
It won't save you from poor eating and sleeping habits.
It won't save you from the mess you may be making of your relationships.

Playboy: 'Amazing Race' finalist Jaime Edmonson is Miss January 2010

Who says doing reality TV doesn't lead to awesome career opportunities? Of course, it helps if you look like "The Amazing Race" contestant Jaime Edmonson. She will be the centerfold in next month's Playboy.
Via the Playboy press release:
Jaime's performance on The Amazing Race, where she and fellow former Dolphins cheerleader Cara Rosenthal fought their way through 40,000 miles of travel and backbreaking tasks to an impressive second place finish, caught Hugh Hefner's attention.
Our favorite part of that is how Jaime "caught Hugh Hefner's attention." Like Hugh Hefner is anything more than a wrinkly figurehead with three blonde girlfriends (nurses) to help maintain his stud image (to help change his diaper). We would be shocked to find out Hef stays up late enough to watch "The Amazing Race."
Are you excited? It sure beats the hell out of Tara Reid in Playboy.

Here's something that goes somewhat against the grain of all the whiz-bang gadgetry we're focusing on at the moment.
Regardless of what Santa leaves beneath your technological tree this season, you'll eventually find yourself facing that blank canvas… once again, just like always. While a new array of sounds may inspire you to work just a little differently or try something just a little bit new, keep in mind: The gear is just a tool.
Here I'm building on the contents of a couple of recent Weekend Provocations, where I've wondered out loud about what it would be like to write music without the gear. If you noticed that these two articles (November 13 and December 11) were essentially the same, with slightly different premises, you get a big gold star.
Truly getting the most out of your gear involves more than just purchasing Shiny New Things. And, as Richard Bellis put

Meet Your Gay(s) of the Week: Kish!

Last week was a big one for Oliver and Kyle of One Life To Live. They finally made it to the bedroom (candlelit, natch) and enjoyed some seriously romantic moments before getting interrupted by a gay bashing. No, not by Oltl sponsors – in this case coitus was interruptus by a thrashing inflicted on fellow Gay of the Week nominee Nick Chavez.
Well, you voted and it seems poor Nick took a beating twice: First by a gay-hating former Blues Clues host, and again in this poll. Kish also easily bested brothers Sam & Dan from The Amazing Race and only really had competition from Adam Lambert.
Check back on Friday's blog when four new contenders vie for the crown!

Every week we pick the gays who we think have made the biggest splash in
television (or pop culture in general) and leave it to you, the keepers of the
flame, to decide who will be crowned Gay of the Week.
Last
week's results had soap opera character Oliver Fish beating out the real live Brendan Burke for the crown. Many, many people were frustrated by that result and felt it was unfair (and perhaps shallow) to pit frothy popular fictional characters against real world heroes.
Well, we definitely heard you and are trying something a little different moving forward.
As you may have noticed, the Best Gay Week Ever column now contains a Hero of the Week poll, which allows us to recognize those real world individuals with more substantial contributions to the world at large. Moving forward, that's where we'll tip our hat to the Brendan Burkes, the Rachel Maddows,

Weekend Provocation: Gear-Free Edition

This week I'm toggling off of Satterwhite's article yesterday. He said:
Under the right conditions, I would probably not think twice about abandoning most of my gear in order to escape the limitations it sometimes burdens me with.
So, the question: What if your gear was suddenly… gone?
I've been dealing with homeowner's insurance this week, so it's on my mind. The San Andreas fault is only a few dozen miles from here, and as far as I know that beast isn't getting any less seismically active. So any minute now this weekend's Provocation could be a horrific reality for me, and for a bunch of you La-based types who are reading this.
Would my process somehow be enriched by a brief (please let it be brief, oh please—!) spell without the comforts of my Mac and my sequencer and my sample libraries and my Waves bundle? Maybe. I'd have

And What A Very Gay Week It Was!
Man, this week it just seemed like one fricking thing after another. If New Jersey legislators weren't getting cold feet about gay marriage, then Details was peddling incredibly stupid and homophobic humor while Uganda was debating executing gays and As the World Turns was getting canceled and GLAAD was flailing all over the place like a spastic octopus. Well, I guess the only thing to do is make fun of it all. Or die trying!
How do you solve a problem like Buju Banton? Many in the Glbt community were less than delighted when a Grammy nomination went to uber-homophobe reggae artist Buju Banton. GLAAD started an online petition urging the academy to reject Buju for a Grammy while others are urging a boycott of Grammy sponsors. (And others still are asking if GLAAD knows what GLAAD is doing.)
I, on the other hand,

I could have sworn that I was trying to find a Halloween costume yesterday, but while I was digging I should have found my aluminum pole instead. It's Festivus again and I'm letting my wishes commence.
I know my tastes skew towards reality TV, but I've gotten some obscure wishes this year on how to improve my television experience.
No more football overrunning The Amazing Race. If we know that an NFL game is stretched into three hours, why can't they start a half hour early and if they end on time have 30 minutes of post-show analysis and interviews? They could even dedicate 30 minutes to pre-game analysis. If you're investing three hours, you are willing to invest four.
