A Surrealists Delight
samxxxul23 June 2021
With all the free time being home due to the pandemic I've been revisiting alot of movies and obscure classics. This gem is so good, there is a loneliness and an isolation that feels familiar now. It isn't directly about a pandemic but has a lot of thematic elements that will resonate right now. Fans of absurd comedy and incel films, get on this right now. It is utterly insane late '80s arthouse gem which is a great example of effective comedy much before the era of raunchy, racy romcoms, from the 90s.

Harrod Blank, son of Les Blank made this debut short on a shoestring budget, it is one of my favorite films ever. He pays homage to absurdity, David Lynch, José Rodriguez Soltero, Banmei Takahashi, Lisa Hammer, Kazuhiro Sano, Herbert Achternbusch, Jon Moritsugu and Yoshihiko Matsui in equal measures filled with whacked out scenes. The opening scene involving Roland (Harrod) a sexless, loner whose incel tendencies are partly reminiscent of Henry Spencer from Eraserhead. Roland introspects his life with his sperm in bathtub is one of the best and there's moving flow of absurd situation comedy throughout the runtime. It may seem uncomfortable and edgy to serious film buffs, but it manages to be surrealistic on pointing out so many themes in this contemporary age. Funny and surreal, all I can say this isn't a romcom with goofball scenes. Harrod packs a ton in 30 minutes with some of the most amazing kitsch and corny acting reminding me of the legendary Arch Hall Jr. He doesn't try hard to complicate existential themes with lots of subplots and boring side characters which is seen of template genre movies.

Don't worry about the plot, just let the movie flow. It is something just plain bizarre and great. Serious cinephiles stay away, I know you're taking everything way too seriously. It will not be of any use, but it will probably alter the way you look at chickens.
