Best films of the noughties No 2: Borat | Andrew Pulver

31 December 2009 12:00 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Sacha Baron Cohen's fantastic satirical invention was unleashed on the world in 2006, and we've been recovering ever since

Ah, Borat. In those far-off days when Sacha Baron Cohen was taking his lumps on local cable TV, could he ever have imagined that he would be sitting astride a veritable cinematic Saturn V, a cultural rocket so powerful it would engender death threats from Central Asia, accrue multiple legal actions from humiliated participants, and alter forever the way men wore swimwear? To give it its full title, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan stunned cinemagoers everywhere with its fantastic satirical invention, the seemingly miraculous improvisational agility of its star, and its gift for unabashed, head-down-the-toilet laughter.

That's why Borat, we feel, deserves such a high place in our countdown. Comedies traditionally never do well in this sort of thing: they rarely are considered to »

Lr's The Blu Room: Bruno Blu-Ray

Brüno (Blu-ray)Universal Home ENTERTAINMENT2009/Rated R/ 82 minsNow Available – List Price $39.98'Brüno' wasn't exactly a memorable experience for me when I saw it in theaters. I'm gonna be honest: I fell asleep on it. But that wasn't the fault of the movie and can be attributed to my lack of sleep after attending so many screenings during the summer movie season. I didn't bother to give it a second viewing since El Guapo gave it such a good write up, but I didn't hesitate to say yes when the blu-ray was offered to me. I'm glad I did, because viewing a film in the comfort of your own home can sometimes be a rewarding experience. If it's a comedy laden with gags and extreme humor like this one, you have the luxury of hitting to rewind button to catch everything unlike in a movie theater. I don't think »

Bruno Blu-ray Review

17 November 2009 9:31 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

We’re done with Sacha Baron Cohen’s most famous creations, cinematically speaking. When Da Ali G show hit it was a sensation in England, and a cult hit in America, and ignitied some stateside interest in this great prankster. On the show he played the daft Ali G (which was turned into the film Ali G Indahouse, released Dtv stateside), the foreigner Borat (which was turned into runaway hit Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan) and the gay German fashionista Bruno (turned into Bruno). With the huge success of Borat, the possibility of Cohen being able to prank people got smaller and smaller, and so Bruno is the last shot until Cohen turns himself into something new, or hides for a while. My review of Bruno after the jump.

It was easier to laugh at Borat. As an outsider, his comic role allowed »

After 'Brüno,' What Does Sacha Baron Cohen Do Next?

With another box-office hit under his belt, the comic actor has plenty of options.

Sacha Baron Cohen as Brüno

All three of Sacha Baron Cohen's satirical comic creations — the gay Austrian fashionista Brüno, the anti-Semitic Kazakhstani journalist Borat and the clueless hip-hop culture maven Ali G — have now gracelessly graced the big screen. "Ali G Indahouse" actually never made it into U.S. theaters but did enjoy a run in the U.K. In 2006, "Borat" appeared almost out of nowhere to become a box-office smash, eventually taking in almost $130 million domestically. And, over the weekend, "Brüno" earned more than $30 million in ticket sales.

With his three well-known characters seemingly exhausted — and a box-office track record that might give him something close to carte blanche with movie studios — where does Cohen go from here? Here's some wild speculation about avenues he might try to explore. »

Cohen's family 'fears stunt mishap'

Sacha Baron Cohen's brother has reportedly said that he is nervous about the actor dying while shooting one of his stunts. Erran Baron Cohen, who produced the music for Ali G Indahouse, Borat and Bruno, has admitted that his funny younger sibling pushes the envelope too far while portraying his alter-egos. Cohen told The Guardian: "I do worry (more) »

Cinema release inspirations including Brüno

10 July 2009 3:22 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

Vassup Boxwishers! Today marks the cinematic return of Sacha Baron Cohen, who has hung up Borat’s mankini and gone all fashionista with Austrian gay reporter Brüno. Like his Kazakhstani predecessor, Brüno is proving controversial with the lawsuits already stacking up, so if you’re in the mood for some outrageous antics including swapping a baby for an iPod catch Brüno new in theatres from today. But if men in see-through suits and bright yellow lederhosen aren’t your thing, there’s mature emotional drama in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee and high school comedy in Fired Up. Click over for more…

If you see… Flamboyant gay style maven Brüno (Baron Cohen) swap his home country of Austria for the Us of A in the comedy mockumentary Brüno.

Daily news dose: Two more join 'Iron Man 2;' Kevin Macdonald to direct 'Eternity'

22 April 2009 10:04 PM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Here's your dose of film news for April 23, 2009:

Gregg will return to reprise his role as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Agent Phil Coulson. No details have been released regarding Mara's role. (The Hollywood Reporter)

Kevin Macdonald, who last directed the intriguing thriller "State of Play," is set to direct "The End of Eternity" for New Regency. According to Variety, the film is based on the 1955 Isaac Asimov novel. According to the trade, "Futuristic tale concerns a ruling class called Eternity whose members can manipulate time and alter history." Macdonald also directed "The Last King of Scotland."

Mark Mylod Asks Anna Faris, What's Your Number? -- He's directing her in a romantic comedy with that title, but it is an elaborate scheme to get her digits

22 April 2009 | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Written by Matt Goldberg British director Mark Mylod is tired of crushing television comedy with his work on comedies like "Entourage" and "The United States of Tara" (and if everyone could forget "Ali G Indahouse" that would really be for the best) and wants to crush romantic comedies and so has stepped up to direct Anna Faris in "What's Your Number?" The film centers on a woman (Faris) who treks through her sexual past to find Mr. Right, exploring the idea of sexual quotas and whether such numbers matter. That's all The Hollywood Reporter says about the story. I really just wrote it up so I'd have an excuse to post this classic and adorable YouTube video. Enjoy. »

Sascha Baron Cohen's 'Bruno' Gets Nc-17 Rating

31 March 2009 5:49 AM, PDT | www.actressarchives.com | See recent Actress Archives news »

His first movie, "Ali G Indahouse," featured multiple drug references, constant foul language, as well as several depictions of, for lack of a better word, "sodomy." His second film, "Borat," among other things featured a scene in which his co-star, Kevin Davitian, laid naked in top of him, forcing him to perform an act we won't even attempt to try euphemizing. So what could be so offensive about Sascha Baron Cohen's upcoming "Brüno" film?According to several MPAA, plenty. On Sunday, the Los Angeles Times reported that the film, which follows the exploits of a gay Austrian fashionista, "has been slapped with an Nc-17 rating on it »
