At the end of season 4, the show was renewed for two years. However, at the end of season 5, the WB (the network airing Reba) merged with UPN, forming the CW. The new powers that be weren't interested in the show at all until they realized what they would have to pay out to cancel the show. Then, the renewed the show for a shot 13 episode season 6, the minimum they could get away with under the contract. This is referenced in a line from Van that leads into the opening credits of episode 6.2.

Fortunately, the producers were nice and wrapped up what would have been a cliffhanger at the end of season 5 (Reba in the hospital, Van and Cheyanne fighting), so if there had been no season 6, we would have been left with things resolved. Fortunately, we got season 6, and they were able to writing things to a satisfying conclusion.
