Ken Howard, the president of SAG-aftra and a veteran character actor in TV and film, has died. He was 71.

Howard was an Emmy and Tony winner who was highly regarded by those in the entertainment community, winning election to become president of the national chapter of the Screen Actors Guild in 2009. In his post, he advocated for a merger with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, a move that he said would strengthen workers' rights in the industry; after he won reelection in 2011, the popular proposal was approved in 2012. Howard went on to win two more consecutive terms at the helm of the joint union, with his most recent election occurring in 2015.

But aside from his advocacy on behalf of SAG members, Howard was more known to national and worldwide audiences thanks to a range of eclectic acting roles throughout his career. He rose to stardom on the »

Ken Howard, who won an Emmy and a Tony Award during his career, has died. He was 71. According to the SAG-aftra guild (via The Hollywood Reporter) where he served as president, he died at his home near Los Angeles. The cause of death has not been announced.

Howard most recently starred as the father of the bride in 2015's The Wedding Ringer and as a mop executive in Joy, but it was his role as Ken Reeves in the TV series The White Shadow where he rose to fame. He »

Ken Howard, who played the title character’s dad on Crossing Jordan, died Wednesday. He was 71.

The Emmy and Tony-winning actor, who also served as president of SAG-aftra, passed away near his home in Los Angeles, according to the organization. No cause of death was cited.

Howard starred in White Shadow, CBS’ late-1970s sports drama. His nearly 50-year acting career also included several other TV gigs, including DynastyThe Thorn Birds, Murder She Wrote and Melrose Place. More recently, he played Jack Donaghy’s Kabletown boss Hank Hooper on 30 Rock.

Emmy and Tony winner Ken Howard, the tall, barrel-chested actor known for starring in CBS’ late ’70s sports drama “The White Shadow,” NBC drama “Crossing Jordan” and, more recently, for his appearances on “30 Rock” as well as for his presidency of SAG-aftra, died Wednesday. He was 71.

SAG-aftra announced that he died at his home near Los Angeles. A cause of death has not yet been revealed.

“Ken was a remarkable leader and his powerful vision for this union was a source of inspiration for all of us,” SAG-aftra acting president Gabrielle Carteris said in a statement. “Ken was an inspirational leader and it is an incredible loss for SAG-aftra, for his family and for everyone who knew him. He was a light that never dimmed and was completely devoted to the membership. He led us through tumultuous times and set our union on a steady course of excellence. We will be forever in his debt. »

‘L.A. Law’ Star Larry Drake Dies at 66

Emmy-winning actor Larry Drake, who played Benny on “L.A. Law,” died Thursday, his rep confirmed. He was 66.

A cause of death has not yet been revealed. According to TMZ, which first reported the news, Drake was found dead by his friend in his Hollywood home.

Drake played the developmentally disabled office assistant Benny Stulwicz on “L.A. Law.,” which was praised for handling Benny’s odyssey in a very progressive fashion, especially for the time, as he gets the job, finds his own apartment and gets a girlfriend over time, sometimes having to fight for his legal rights with the help of the attorneys who employ him. Drake recurred on the series from 1987-94.

He was Emmy nominated for the role three times, in 1988, 1989 and 1990, winning the first two times out. He reprised the role for “L.A. Law: The Movie” in 2002.

Ratings: NBC’s ‘Little Big Shots’ Even More Impressive Sunday, Nears 15 Million Viewers

One week after a special preview episode of “Little Big Shots” airing behind “The Voice” delivered surprisingly strong numbers, the NBC alternative series was even more impressive in its regular timeslot bow Sunday. In fact, it basically matched last Tuesday’s demo average while rising to nearly 15 million total viewers, making it the dominant broadcast program of the night.

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, NBC was the broadcast leader in key demos Sunday, opening with an encore of last week’s “Little Big Shots” preview episode (1.2/4 in 18-49, 8.0 million viewers overall). It was followed by the timeslot debut of the Steve Harvey-hosted series (2.8/9 in 18-49, 14.8 million viewers overall), which beat the combined young-adult audience of chief timeslot competitors “Once Upon a Time” on ABC and comedies on Fox.
