Romanian director Cristian Mungiu shows a fantasy world in which the person zapping is seen by the remote control device.
17 June 2013 | by (FIPRESCI/Cinema of the world) – See all my reviews

The best thing which ardent cinema admirers would care to learn about Romanian short film "Zapping" is that it has tremendous observational value as it was the first film made by acclaimed Romanian director Cristian Mungiu who has been successful at Cannes International Film Festival. As the film is based upon the impact of television on ordinary people, the very idea of zapping appear to be absolutely authentic, true to life as it is something which most us have been doing throughout our lives. After having started his short film in a realist manner, director Cristian Mungiu makes us appreciate the idiosyncratic world of television in Romania where every second show happens to be made in America. We are taken to a bizarre realm of outlandish fantasy when a seemingly innocent gadget such as a remote control is shown to be controlled by state controlled television police who ruthlessly persecute any TV remote device controller who encourages television viewers to be associated with any kind of relaxation activity. The film also rubbishes the idea that remote controls are controlled by some kind of mysterious rays.
