Storyline

Amongst the communal riots that erupt in the city, Tara shelters a wayward Sakina from a crazed mob and a bond that blossoms into love is created. The two eventually get married and have a son. The happy family, now living in Amritsar, gets the shock of their lives when Sakina learns that her father (Amrish Puri), whom she previously believed died in the riots back in Amritsar, is still alive after seeing his picture in a tattered, old newspaper. Upon contacting him, Sakina's father, now the mayor of Lahore in Pakistan, arranges for his daughter to arrive in Lahore to see him. Sakina leaves for Lahore minus Tara and her son, and upon reaching the city, learns of her father's plans for her - plans that include forcing Sakina to forget about her family and start life anew in Pakistan. Then begins an extraordinary journey which will lead Tara to cross the border into Pakistan to find his love Sakina. Written by gavin@sunny_deol2009@yahoo.com

The best and most authentic Indian movie ever made
3 July 2001 | by (New York, USA) – See all my reviews

Some so called secular, elite class and intellectuals may find jingoism of this movie hard to digest(even though they will like it in their hearts), the fact is this movies is awesome. It is the most politically correct movie about India/Pakistan where as India has accepted Pakistan but pakistan has not as is portrayed by the characters Sunny and Amrish. This is also the most realistic movie about the horrors of Partition. The movie take u back to the 1940's and 1950's and technically superb. The story and dialogues are excellant and so is the acting by Amrish Puri and Ameesha Patel(move over bollywood babes who consider them good actresses, likes of kajols, kareenas, manishas-in her 2nd film Ameesha have left u all miles behind). BUT THE MOVIE BELONGS TO "SUNNY DEOL" AND NO PRAISE IS TOO MUCH FOR HIS ACTING IN THE DIFFICULT ROLE OF TARA SINGH. He perhaps was born to play that role and has proven once again after the towering performance in "BORDER", that their may be star/actors of the millenium ala amithabs/khans/dilip kumars and so but he is above all and NO-ONE could play challenging roles like in Border/Gadar like him. If Gadar was produced in Hollywood, this movie will sweep the awards and Sunny will get all major best actor awards, unfortunately it is India and though it is destined to become biggest hit ever, our biased media/critics will most probably ignore this movie at award time like they did with Border.
