Ah, Paris. Ah, Juliette Binoche. If you need a dash of the Continent -- romantic, inscrutable, ardent -- you probably cannot ever go wrong with a flick set in the City of Light and starring one of the most luminous actresses ever to grace the arthouse screen. And this cinematic sonnet is just the thing to satisfy such a hankering: sneak in a baguette and a bottle of red wine, and you’re all set. Which isn’t to say that writer-director Cédric Klapisch’s (Russian Dolls, The Spanish Apartment) rambling ode to the city and its people is entirely satisfying as a movie: these loosely interconnected tales of lonely, despondent, sad Parisians never quite gels into something wholly cohesive, but c’est la vie, non?

Here's a quick look at what's opening in limited release this weekend. If they're not playing where you live, keep an eye out as they make the rounds. And if all else fails, there's always DVD....
Bright Star(pictured) comes from writer/director Jane Campion, best known for her Oscar-winning screenplay for The Piano. (She got a director nomination for that, too.) Bright Star tells the true story of 19th-century romance between poet John Keats and one Fanny Brawne, played by Ben Whishaw and Abbie Cornish. It has an 87% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes. It's playing on about 20 screens in New York, L.A., San Francisco, Seattle, Minneapolis, and Dallas.
The Burning Plain is the feature directorial debut by Guillermo Arriaga, who wrote Babel, 21 Grams, and Amores Perros. Once again he favors the fractured timeline and multiple stories; however, this time the result isn't being met with much praise. Only

Nothing adds gravity to an otherwise featherweight trifle quite like terminal illness: In film, as in life, it’s all fun and games until somebody dies a tragic, early death. Paris prominently features a freak death, a handsome young dancer (Romain Duris) who might perish if he can’t get a heart transplant, and a running time that tops two hours. Yet When The Cat’s Away/The Spanish Apartment writer-director Cédric Klapisch never threatens to turn his bemused look at a broad cross-section of Parisians seeking deep meaningful emotional connections—or at least casual sex—into anything more

Films on the cutting edge. That's how I would describe the 50 movies on this list. While some moviegoers may find it an 'alien' experience to refer to sub-titles in understanding what's happening on the big screen, a good number of audiences are totally enjoying the different and often surprising take by many foreign filmmakers, nothwithstanding the language barrier.
Content-wise, the 50 movies feature stories about war and peace, love and romance, family affairs, coming-of-age tales, cultural and religious diversity, social issues (including prostitution and abortion) and personal - celebrating life or facing death with dignity. Coverage-wise, tMF list down many of the best foreign films from 2000 until last year from the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and about 15 other countries in Europe, North and Latin America and Asia-Pacific.
