8 Incredible Movie Scenes Shot In A Single Take

United Artists

The amount of work that goes into shooting a single scene in a movie – let alone the entire finished product – is incredible. There are all sorts of considerations to be made, including keeping framing consistent and correct, making sure timing is absolutely perfect and enabling actors to do the very best job they can do.

The longer a scene goes on, the more likely it is that something will go wrong. The smallest of mistakes can render a whole scene unusable, and this is one of the reasons why scenes tend to last about ten seconds between cuts (even less during action sequences).

Which makes attempting to shoot a scene in one take an incredibly arduous and ambitious task. The ability to co-ordinate such a complex feat is what separates a good, competent director from a great one. It also singles out certain actors as being extremely capable,

Robert Downey Jr.'s "The Route" and the Lost Art of the Long-Form Car Commercial

  • IFC
Robert Downey Jr.'s
Last week, the Internet was abuzz with a new stop-motion ad for Planters that featured Robert Downey Jr. as the new voice of Mr. Peanut, but it was actually a commercial featuring a pre-"Iron Man" Downey Jr. that caught my eye when I came across One Cool Thing A Day's selection of "The Route," a 12-minute ad produced by Volvo for its line of V50 station wagons. Produced by the Swedish carmaker in 2004, "The Route" does indeed show off all the amenities of the V50, but also functions as a surreal, elliptical piece of noir, courtesy of "The Grifters" director Stephen Frears, wherein Downey Jr. confronts himself as a not-so-compatible travel companion for himself in his search for a town called Confidence. The first part is here (and the link to part two is here):

At the time, Martin Buckley, a strategic planner from the ad firm that produced the short,

Clive Owen: The Hollywood Interview

Clive Owen Gets Back

By

Alex Simon

Clive Owen is one of those actors that keep surprising you. Just when you think the audience, and the Hollywood establishment, has pegged him as an action hero, a leading man, or a romantic comedy pin-up, Owen pulls an about-face and does something unexpected.

It all started October 3, 1964 in Coventry, England. Owen’s father, a country music singer, abandoned the family when he was just three. His mother later remarried, with Clive and his four brothers raised by his mother and stepfather, who worked for British Rail. Owen has characterized those early years as "rough." A self-described “solidly working class” kid, Owen was bitten by the acting bug at age 13 and followed his dream to The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art several years later. Initially cutting his teeth on high-profile British television programs such as “Chancer” and “Sharman,” as well as art house
