There's no element of this that hasn't been part of scores of TV films, but it's all so compressed that the results are weirdly intriguing, though the pace and atmosphere shift far too drastically towards the end and what has been a pretty interesting study of character dynamics, sexual politics, identity, and the burden of the past, becomes a routine thriller. I wanted to know more about these people, especially the men: does James' penchant for intrigue drive his women away? Where do Hugo's nightmares come from, and what is his mum trying to tell Maria? The only character we really get to know is Maria, and her transformation into Judith is both chilling and convincing. There's nothing particularly remarkable in the look of this, except for some odd camera work and small images that suggest the minute details of these people's lives. What is remarkable is the acting of the three leads, especially Marc Warren, who here looks especially like a young blond version of Malcolm McDowell; as he did in Oliver Twist, he steals this without seeming to try to steal it, and he's going to be a major star someday soon.
