The Voices: Ryan Reynolds’s strangest role yet

11 July 2015 1:00 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

‘He’s one of few actors to play both Marvel and DC superheroes and, in 2011, he narrated a film about a whale. Yet to many Reynolds remains difficult to place’

Ryan Reynolds has tried everything. He’s done gross-out comedy in Van Wilder, intellectual posturing in The Nines and mega-budget action in R.I.P.D. He’s one of relatively few actors to play both Marvel and DC superheroes (Deadpool and the Green Lantern respectively) and, in 2011, he narrated a film about a whale. Yet to many he remains difficult to place: a forgettable midpoint on the spectrum of Hollywood’s famous Ryans, slap bang between Gosling and Phillippe.

Nonetheless, Reynolds is clearly a likable man and a capable actor, which perhaps explains why directors from Tarsem Singh to Atom Egoyan are still keen to work with him. Out this week on DVD, The Voices sees him unite with Persepolis director Marjane Satrapi »

Think Hollywood is bereft of original ideas? You just might after this. Here's our look at the assorted movie sequels currently in the works. Since we last did a list like this, we've dropped films that seem to have died a death - Wanted 2, Spring Breakers 2 - but we'll keep this rundown up to date over the coming month.

Sony is pressing ahead with a third Jump Street movie, as well as a possible Jump Street vs Men In Black film, and a female-headlined spin-off. For 23 Jump Street specifically, Rodney Rothman is back and working on the script (he wrote the second one). It's unclear yet if Chris Miller and Phil Lord can find breathing space in their schedule to direct. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are both expected back, »

'Alvin and the Chipmunks 4' Lands Bella Thorne

23 March 2015 2:55 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Bella Thorne is the latest actor to join the 20th Century Fox sequel Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Road Chip. She joins a cast that already includes returning actor Jason Lee along with Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler and Jesse McCartney. Earlier in the year, it was confirmed that Tony Hale will be playing the villain.

Walt Becker is taking the helm on this live-action/CGI follow-up. He is best known for his live-action comedies National Lampoon's Van Wilder, Old Dogs and Wild Hogs. Bella Thorne is playing a charter named Ashley, but no further details were given. It isn't known if she is appearing live in the flesh, or if she is voicing one of the animated animals.

This time out, Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Road Chip revolves around a series of misunderstandings. Chipmunks Alvin, Simon and Theodore believe their manager Dave is going to propose to his new girlfriend. »

The Voices Review

16 March 2015 4:30 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director: Marjane Satrapi

Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Gemma Arterton, Anna Kendrick, Jacki Weaver

Certificate: 15

Running Time: 101 minutes

Synopsis: Warehouse worker Jerry (Reynolds) is a shy young man plagued with mental illness. After realising that not taking his medication allows him to communicate with his pets and therefore not be alone, he decides to stop taking them. Once off of the pills however, the bodies start to mount.

Ryan Reynolds doesn’t necessarily have the best reputation in Hollywood when it comes to movies. His breakout role came with Van Wilder which wasn’t the most highbrow of films, then came Blade Trinity and his unfortunate decision to play The Green Lantern has followed him around ever since. He is nonetheless a remarkable actor with turns in Buried, The Nines and Finder’S Fee showcasing what he can achieve when given something good. The Voices is another example of the latter, with »

The Voices: is Ryan Reynolds destined to be Hollywood's nearly man?

16 March 2015 2:00 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Reynolds knocks one out of the park in this kitschy comic horror, but marquee-topping stardom still seems to elude him

I’ve been a big fan of Ryan Reynolds since Van Wilder: Party Liaison in 2002, when he played a role not unlike Otter, Tim Matheson’s suavely degenerate Big Man On Campus in Animal House (the link was intentional: Matheson played Van’s dad). I’ve enjoyed him, if not his work, intermittently ever since. I like his blandly cheesy mall-rat good looks, which can be wimped down for comedy or buffed up for action, and his willingness to be serious and very silly. And now he has given us what may be the performance of his career, as a kindly serial killer in the bracingly dark and violent black comedy The Voices – and over here in the Us the thing gets a simultaneous VOD and limited theatrical release. »

'Alvin and the Chipmunks 4' Gets New Title and Villain

11 February 2015 12:31 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Do you like puns? Then you'll love the new title of Alvin and The Chipmunks 4, now subtitled The Road Chip. In addition to the title being confirmed, the CGI/Live Action comedy adventure has also found it's main villain. Tony Hale, known for his scene-stealing roles in the popular TV series Veep and Arrested Development, will be going up against Alvin, Theodore and Simon.

Walt Becker, the man behind such neo-comedy classics as National Lampoon's Van Wilder, Old Dogs and Wild Hogs, will be directing this time out. Jason Lee is back as the always tormented Dave. Also along for this new adventure are Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler and Jesse McCartney.

No story details have been revealed yet, with the script being as closely guarded as the plot to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Ross Bagdasarian and Janice Marmen are producing, with a Christmas release date already in place. »

24 January 2015 1:00 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Charlie Lyne's documentary Beyond Clueless harks back to the classic teen movies that shaped the '90s.

Featuring narration from The Craft's Fairuza Balk (and with clips of Robin Tunney, Devon Sawa and co), it made us feel a sudden pang of nostalgia and sent us on our own trip down memory lane to find out where they - and the rest of the '90s teen movie crew - are now.

So, here are 11 stars from some of our favourite '90s teen movies, and what they've gone on to do since:

1. Devon Sawa - Idle Hands (1999)

Dreamy Devon Sawa starred as lazy stoner Anton Tobias - who turns mass murderer after his hand becomes possessed - in the horror comedy Idle Hands.

He went on to play teenage prophet of doom Alex Browning in Final Destination (2000), and appeared as similarly unstable Stan in Eminem's controversial music »
