Infidelity in the computer age..., 30 January 2003

Author: David Langeneckert from Gold Coast, Australia

*** This comment may contain spoilers ***

This film is an examination of webcams, the Internet, and privacy in a sad story of infidelity. Medium level spoilers follow.

The focus of the film is "Venus", an author who has agreed to write a book while living away from her family under the scrutiny of a webcam, focused to watch her as she works. However she doesn't realise that, while she is taking advantage of being away from her life as a wife and mother, a hidden camera is focused on the rest of her life, recording her affairs for the sake of the computer techie who set up the equipment. When the inevitable happens, and her family discovers her unfaithfulness, they all struggle to understand the relationship gone wrong.

An interesting side-line to the disintergrating relationship is the blossoming romance of her two children. Thorsten her son, interestingly uses his own webcam to discover his new girlfriend's sexuality and enter into an constructive yet innocent relationship which makes for a pleasant counter-balance to his mother's.

All in all, this film brings an interesting perspective to an old story, and for those of us living in Australia or the United States, the film offers a very interesting look at European attitudes towards sexuality. Seven out of ten.
