X-W vs. TF is a space shooter, where you get to control X-Wings, TIE Fighters and other Imperial- and Rebel ships. It had amazing graphic- and sound effects for the time. The game was probably meant to be played in multiplayer-mode, i.e. versus other (non computer controlled) players. Sure, there were singleplayer missions also, but they had no background story, and no characters from the Star Wars universe appeared, so they weren't that interesting.
I used to spend hours and hours playing this game on Microsoft's "The Zone" versus other online players... I don't know if you still can (this was a couple of years ago) but if you do, try it out --you won't be disappointed!
