Family's Journey
xenatorres23 September 2007
Warning: Spoilers
"Pomegranate" is a beautiful and moving film, written and directed by Kraig Kuzirian. It's a moving story about family – that no matter what issues a family may face, that a family can come together in a time of need, even if they've been apart for a long time.

The movie also deals with faith as one of the main characters is a priest in Beirut, who must deal with the loss of his family in a bombing. He journeys to the States to reunite with his family, in particular his cousin, a Hollywood director, in order to deal with his loss.

Michael Gorjain plays the director, who has lost his love of his family and his culture, but rediscovers them through his cousin, the priest.

The film has a lot of personality and avoids being completely bleak and dramatic by having eccentric family members to lighten the mood so the movie doesn't become overly heavy.

The movie grows on you.

The movie starts with a young man who acts as if he never saw an automated door. It's a bit insulting, insinuating that the man is from a backward country. He comes from Beirut. I'm sure they have plenty of automatic doors there.

As the movie goes along, there are the typical stereotypes of Armenian life. But then, there are extreme characters as well.

In the end, the characters develop and you feel a great deal of sympathy for them. The acting is very good.

Finally, you leave the movie feeling that you've seen something worthwhile.

Worth seeing.

Its a bit sloppy in the beginning, but its a lovely story and very moving by the time you reach the end. I was worried for about the first 20 minutes, but eventually the movie seems to find its feet and grows into a very sweet love story. Between people, between cultures, between families, between generations.

I saw it at a festival and I would love to see it again, but I'm not sure where I could. I hope it comes out on DVD soon.

The best performances came from the great character actors (and non actors) who were used in the film. Great faces and personalities that really captured this culture. The scenes at the family gatherings were my favorite. So sweet and moving.
