Gritty German film about ageing and relationships
16 June 2001 | by (Cambridge, England) – See all my reviews

A gritty film set in the West Berlin of fifteen years after the end of WW2.

Frau Friederica Minkwitz is an elderly widow, and the tenement block she lives in is scheduled for redevelopment, but she hasn't done anything about organising alternative accommodation, and doesn't want to leave.

Alfred Bergmann is her lodger, and he is a Drag Artiste in a seedy bar. He too is no longer young, and he finds life a struggle.

But the two get on well together, like Mother and son. Frau Minkwitz's daughter arrives from Hamburg to help her Mother with the move, and is exasperated to find nothing has been done. Friction develops between the three main characters as Frau Minkwitz and Bergmann are content to sit tight in the "Reservation" of the film's title, as adjacent tenement buildings are demolished.

More allegorical than entertaining, the film explores the relationships of this unique triangle.
