Mario Lantigua met his fiancé, Elaine, on the set of a zombie movie she was helping to make. Elaine "has always been in love with filmmaking, ever since she was a little girl," Mario told Break. But Elaine was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma at 30, at which point Mario quit his job to take care of her, though the expenses mounting from her illness has forced the couple to postpone their wedding for six years. So that brings us up to speed with Break's video above. Elaine and Mario went on a date to see a movie, but before the film started, »

Cannes: New Movies From Pixar, Woody Allen Expected at 68th Film Festival

26 March 2015 11:55 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

There are still three weeks to go before the Cannes Film Festival unveils its official-selection lineup, but so far, the latest Pixar 3D animated extravaganza and new films from Woody Allen, Todd Haynes, Jeff Nichols, Denis Villeneuve and Arnaud Desplechin appear to be securing their positions in the event’s 68th annual edition (May 13-24).

In keeping with his longtime habit of avoiding festival accolades, Allen will likely receive an out-of-competition berth for his 45th feature, “Irrational Man,” starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone (who starred in the director’s “Magic in the Moonlight”). Among other U.S. fare, Cannes will get an early start on the summer blockbuster season with Disney/Pixar’s feature toon “Inside Out,” marking a second trip to the Croisette for director Pete Docter (who co-helmed with Ronaldo Del Carmen) after his “Up” opened the festival in 2009. As already announced, George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road, »

SXSW Film Review: ‘Raiders!’

14 March 2015 11:30 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

There’s a good reason why TV and movies have adopted the disclaimer “Remember kids, don’t try this at home.” As inventive as they were impressionable, pint-sized super-fans Chris Strompolos, Eric Zala and Jayson Lamb nearly killed themselves on multiple occasions attempting to remake the first Indiana Jones movie, breaking it down shot-for-shot and filming each scene as best as their limited resources would allow over the course of eight summers. The result has become the stuff of fan legend, inspiring magazine articles, movie deals and what feels like the perfect Hollywood ending, which the geek-bait documentary “Raiders!” reveals for the first time, as the original trio reunite a quarter-century later to finish the airplane scene they deemed too difficult to film as kids. Often poignant, occasionally pathetic, but never short of entertaining, “Raiders!” captures the obsessive hold movies have on young people’s imaginations, as exemplified by such pics as “Son of Rambow, »

The fantasist: The comic art of Woody Allen

24 January 2015 12:49 PM, PST | The Moving Arts Journal | See recent The Moving Arts Journal news »

Everyone knows Woody Allen. At least, everyone thinks they know Woody Allen. His plumage is easily identifiable: horn-rimmed glasses, baggy suit, wispy hair, kvetching demeanor, ironic sense of humor, acute fear of death. As is his habitat: New York City, though recently he has flown as far afield as London, Barcelona, and Paris. His likes are well known: Bergman, Dostoevsky, New Orleans jazz. So too his dislikes: spiders, cars, nature, Wagner records, the entire city of Los Angeles. Whether or not these traits represent the true Allen, who’s to say? It is impossible to tell, with Allen, where cinema ends and life begins, an obfuscation he readily encourages. In the late nineteen-seventies, disillusioned with the comedic success he’d found making such films as Sleeper (1973), Love and Death (1975), and Annie Hall (1977), he turned for darker territory with Stardust Memories (1980), a film in which, none too surprisingly, he plays a »

Night Moves DVD Review

9 January 2015 4:30 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director: Kelly Reichardt

Cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning, Peter Saarsgard

Certificate: 15

Run Time: 112 minutes

Other films in the wheelhouse of eco-terrorism tend to stereotype characters as either anarchists or vegan-hippie types Night Moves skirts both of these and instead has three normal people, who live completely mundane lives, join together to take a stance. Refreshingly their act of blowing-up the dam isn’t glorified in any way; the response of their peers isn’t the adulation that they expect, but rather disdain and confusion.

Reichardt isn’t known for her plot-heavy films, preferring to tell her story through the visuals and sound; this is a tradition she continues here. Night Moves is almost hypnotic, the slow, drawn-out shots pulling you deep into the world of the three characters. The music, although sparse at the beginning, builds gently through the film, acting as a steady pulse which builds and builds up to the a crescendo. »
