Storyline

A Docudrama, "Harnessing The Sun" explores the applications and developments in utilizing Solar Energy to benefit mankind, and the planet Earth. Academy Award Nominee ("Only When I Laugh") Joan Hackett, and an expert cast, reveal the unique and increasingly important uses of Solar Energy. An outgrowth of Writer/Director Dirk Summers' Award winning "Survival of Spaceship Earth," "Harnessing The Sun" explores the nine categories of Solar Energy: Active; Passive; Wind Power; Biomas; Photovoltaics; OTEC (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion); Hydropower; Satellite Power Systems; and Thermal. And as Joan Hackett says in her closing scene of "Harnessing The Sun," "We must embrace the sun. To ignore it is to commit planetary suicide." Written by Jacqueline Green

A comprehensive presentation of solar energy uses.
31 March 2001 | by (Los Angeles, CA) – See all my reviews

During the optimistic early days, this balanced film gives practical examples of what's been done with solar energy. Over 20 years later, we're still struggling with the economics of large-scale solar electric. Recent high oil prices may make this film an interesting and possibly useful revisit.

(This was one of the last films Joan Hackett appeared in before her untimely death.)
